    Important information regarding UVU PREP Year 2 Program and Application

    WHEN: Tuesday, June 3 – Friday, July 18, 2014, except July 4. WHERE: UVU PREP Year 2 will take place on the Orem campus of Utah Valley University. COST: Though there is no enrollment fee, students are expected to arrange their own transportation and provide their own lunch or money for lunch. REQUIREMENTS: - Parental permission - 90% or better in mathematics, science, and English (7th grade) - 85% or better in mathematics, science, and English (8th and 9th grades) - Honors and Advanced Classes: 85% (7th grade) or 80% (8th and 9th grades) - Must be in good standing in all courses - Satisfactory conduct grades - Attendance is required for 7 weeks during the summer with only 3 excused absences accepted before dismissal. Where do I apply? If applying, please complete the online application below. If you are unable to fill out the online application, please pick up an application at the SCUP office on the UVU Campus. IMPORTANT TIPS / CHECKLIST To increase your chances of being accepted, be sure to do the following: Read the information on UVU PREP. Be sure you are willing to fully commit to the program and make sure you have permission from your parent or guardian. Before completing the application, research and discuss transportation arrangements with your parents. Classes are held daily at the Orem campus of Utah Valley University. Submit your application on time. The application must be submitted on or before December 15, 2013. Review your application packet to ensure that you have included the following items (Your application will NOT be processed until it is complete): 1. INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE YEAR ONE PREP APPLICATION: 1. Be sure to answer all questions. 2. Remember your parent/guardian’s permission. 3. Deadline: December 13th, 2013. Don’t miss it. 4. CURRENT REPORT CARD Submit a copy of your current report card; no hand- written, no web based, and no progress reports are accepted. It MUST: 1. List the school district you live in under the Current School Information, even if you attend a private school or are home-schooled. 2. Include information on conduct. 3. Signed by your parent or guardian. Your application is incomplete without their signature. 4. Indicate if any of your courses are Gifted and Talented. 5. Be an official copy of latest report card . If you have lost your report card, ask your Guidance Counselor for a duplicate on school letterhead and have it signed by the Counselor or Principal. 3. TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION UVU PREP student participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the UVU campus. Talk to your parents. Check out bus routes, carpooling, or other transportation. 4. PRIVACY NOTICE With a few exceptions, you are entitled to be informed about the data UVU collects about you. “Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974” (FERPA) regulations will be followed to secure all information submitted. Overview of courses for Year 2 program: Algebraic Structures: The study of groups, rings, and fields using the systems of integers and rational numbers as models; derivation of algebraic properties of these systems. Introduction to Physics: Lecture/laboratory class focusing on: Mechanics-units and physical quantities, equilibrium of a particle, motion in a straight line, Newton’s Second Law, motion in a plane, work and energy, inertia and momentum; Electricity and Magnetism-Coulomb’s Law, electric field, potential, direct current circuits, magnetic fields, capacitors in series and parallel. Topics in Problem Solving (Seminar): Numerous and varied experiences with problem solving as a method of inquiry and application so that students can use problem-solving approaches to investigate and understand mathematical content, formulate problems, develop and apply a variety of strategies to solve problems, verify and interpret results, generalize and extrapolate patterns of solutions and problem solving strategies, and acquire confidence in using mathematics meaningfully. Hours: Daily Monday through Thursday, hours vary by campus. An average day is from 6-7 hours, plus homework. A field trip is scheduled on a Friday during the session.
