SHHS AVID Application 2019 - 2020

AVID is an academic class offered to students within Desert Sands Unified School District. The purpose of this program is to prepare students for success in high school and college. This course will provide students with appropriate study and organization skills and support for being successful in rigorous high school classes. As a result, students are often able to attend the colleges of their dreams. AVID has a very high placement rate for attendance in four year colleges. This is achieved through student, parent, and school wide teamwork.

All students interested in becoming a member of the AVID Class must follow the guidelines and rules outlined in this packet. AVID students MUST complete all of their academic responsibilities with excellence. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Using organizational system, complete with supplies, at all times
Taking Focused Notes in all core classes (English, math, science, and humanities)
Participating in AVID Tutorial twice a week
Monitoring their Synergy and Google Classroom accounts
Communicating with teachers and complete work, if absent
Having good attendance (including tardies)
Attending field trips and community events
Completing community service
Attending tutoring sessions, if assigned
Completing weekly Learning Logs
Maintaining a GPA of a 2.5 or higher, with no Ds or Fs
Setting an example that reflects positively upon the school (No repeated discipline issues)

AVID students are expected to be trustworthy and honest, model good citizenship, and maintain high academic standards. The procedures/rules below are designed to insure that students are able to meet these standards.

1. Academics - Students should not have any grade lower than a 81% (B-). Students who fall below a C average in any class at the progress report period will be placed on academic probation. (*If you currently have a GPA lower than 2.5, but are motivated to improve your grades, please apply!)

2. Behavior – Students must maintain good citizenship, with no suspensions or referrals. Any student who is suspended from school, receives a referral, or is involved in any act of bullying may be removed from the class, immediately, unless determined otherwise by the advisor/administration.

3. Running For Office – Students who want to run for an office must be accepted into the AVID class and be approved by the advisor in order to run for an elected office.
