Features of Culture Pyramid
Below, in each box, tell about your culture as it relates to each section of the Culture Pyramid. Look at the list of Concrete and Abstract Features on the handout, and come up with examples of each from your culture (the culture to which you feel you belong). You may have more than one example for each. For the Abstract Features, make a statement that sums up your belief/feeling/actions about each of the features.

How do you identify yourself racially? (Not necessarily how society labels you.)
1. Personal or Individual Culture
I am a culture of one. No one is exactly like me. I am unique.
2. Family Culture
I belong to a family whith whom I share many cultural beliefs and characteristics. Those beliefs and characteristics may differ from those of others.
3. Large Group Culture - Religion, Team, School, etc.
I choose to belong to certain groups based on the aspects that I agree with or want to be a part of.
4. Racial/Ethnic Culture
Society ascribes certain characteristics to me based on my membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, even though they may not be accurate. I may or may not identify with members of my "race" or ethnicity.
5. Community Culture - Neighborhood, City, State
I may or may not live with or near other members of my culture, but I belong to a certain geographical culture based on where I choose to live.
6. National Culture - Country's Norms/Rules
I may or may not agree with the aspects of the dominant culture, but I must abide by certain rules and expectaions in order to be accepted. I may not identify with my national culture, but I recognize how different others are whn I travel to other countries (or meet people from other countries).
7. Culture of Humanity - Human Race
We are all human beings. We all technically belong to the same "race."
