(1) In response to the Chief Executive’s “Mother of Hong Kong’s children” interview — from Hong Kong mothers

In a broadcasted interview on 12 June 2019, Chief Executive Carrie Lam used the analogy of a doting mother to compare the current situation in Hong Kong with herself. She said that despite there being a 1 million-strong protest on 9 June and tens of thousands of young people protesting at the frontlines of LegCo, she fully insists on passing the extradition bill, saying that she is doing this so as to not spoil “wayward” children.

We are a group of mothers from Hong Kong, but we absolutely will not use deadly weapons such as tear gas, rubber bullets, or bean bag rounds to attack our children. We also find it difficult to see how someone can be indifferent and apathetic to images of young people being beaten with batons, and suffering from serious and bloody wounds.

After all, the citizens of Hong Kong are not your children — what the people need is not your handouts, but, instead, what they need is for you, the head of this city and a civil servant, to listen to views from all sides of society, and to make appropriate and timely responses.

How egoistic must one be, to say that the voices of 1.03 million people is “wayward”?

How egoistic must one be, to say that in expressing their concerns over the bill, that 3,000 members of the legal sector are "wayward"?

You are also a mother of two. If you truly treat Hong Kong residents as your own children, or even just simply stand in the shoes of the many parents of Hong Kong, you will understand, with some empathy, just how heartbreaking it is to see our young people fighting for their own future at the frontlines.

Ms. Lam, the children of Hong Kong do not need you to be their mother. Instead, they need you to be a responsible and accountable leader, who proactively responds to the overwhelming public dissent that has been expressed over the extradition bill, and makes the right decision to shelve or withdraw the bill.

We, as mothers, work extremely hard to build a better future for our children. We see a future where our children can live in their homeland, free from fear. We hereby appeal to you, as Hong Kong residents, as equals, to stop hiding behind your false political sob story to gain our sympathy — we want you to take action to show that you truly care about our younger generation.
