Survey on Standards and Guidance for Urban Environmental Sampling and Analysis

This survey is part of a process in the creation of a Standards and Guidance Document for Urban Environmental Sampling and Analysis. The creation of these guidelines have been commissioned by the IAI (Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland) with the support of National Monuments Service. The Standards and Guidance are being produced by Roisin O'Droma of IAC Archaeology, along with a supporting expert technical group.

These standards and guidelines will address topics including the qualifications of environmental archaeologists, types of urban environmental analysis, sampling strategies, processing, reporting, publishing and the curation and archiving of environmental samples.

The first stage in the creation of the new guidelines, is to consult with the body of professional archaeologists in order to gain data on the different aspects of urban environmental archaeology as well as knowledge gaps for the creation of the Standards and Guidelines. Please find some questions below, as your thoughts, experiences and ideas are important in this process.

Explanation of Acronyms:

ERSR - Environmental Remains Strategy Report (A report stating which samples should be taken from where in an excavation and why)

ERAR - Environmental Remains Assessment Report (A report written after samples are processed, stating which should be taken to further analysis)

ERR - Environmental Remains Report (A report detailing the full analysis, including tables of identifications/results and interpretations)
