Things I wish my professor...
UA Student Support & Wellness chairs Alice Zielinski and Tamar Weseley are preparing a talk and document for faculty about student support. We're collecting things that faculty can do to help students and things that they might avoid saying or doing -- in effect, we'd like to teach by example. We hugely appreciate your help in sharing your experiences, thoughts, and ideas with us!

For questions, comments, feedback, or anything else, please contact us at ua-wellness-chairs@mit.edu

"Professor" can also refer to your advisor, research supervisor, or TA.

KNEW: What are things you wish your professor knew?
Is there something that you wish a professor paid more attention to or noticed? e.g. mental health, how to help a student in need, how to identify signs of Y, that you struggle with your psets, that you don't sleep much, being a student is hard etc.
ASKED: What are things you wish your professor asked?
e.g. you seem to be very tired, have you been resting okay? There seems to be something on your mind, do you want to talk about it? Would you like me to help you get connected to support resources?
DID: What are things you wish your professor did?
Was there something that a professor did or you wish they did that was helpful when you were struggling? Did they spend time talking to you? Meet you with understanding and an extension on an assignment? Connect you to support?
AVOIDED: What are things you wish your professor avoided saying or doing?
Did you reach out to a professor during a difficult time and did that professor react in a way that was unhelpful? If so, what made your professor's reaction unhelpful or upsetting?
Any questions that we didn't ask or anything else that is important for us to share with faculty? Or anything you'd like us to know?
