Considering all of the increased challenges farmers are facing this year - cuts from Federal local food purchasing programs, uptick in isolation in immigrant and BIPOC farmers, increased prices for so many of what they need to farm - it's important that our communities around the region mobilize to support them. With all that's going on, food access has never been more important.

Farm Buds offers an opportunity to support farmers through community trips to farms, where we learn about their operations and get some experiential opportunities to work on collaborative farm projects. And we have fun, eat food and feel fulfilled at the end. It’s a great way to experience and engage with local food systems! Carpools available and food provided.

Directions for signing up for trips:

- The trips with dates will have a corresponding form. Please fill it out if you want to go.

- If you're interested in trips without specific dates, check their box and we'll reach out when the date is confirmed to see if you're able to make it or not .

- There are lots of forms, but keep in mind that each form represents a beautiful and memorable trip to a farm.

Join Farm Buds from the North Shore and beyond as we learn about Justin's blueberry operation and get our hands dirty with some project work in the perennial beds. Folks will also be able to pick some blueberries which you can take home! This a great opportunity for folks who want to support local food systems and appreciate hands-on projects. This is family friendly event and lunch will be provided.

Aitkin Farm Extravaganza - Aitkin, MN - August 7th-9th (Camp Out!)

The Farm Buds Aitkin Farming Extravaganza is a one-of-a-kind weekend designed to reconnect people with the land, local food systems, and the farmers who nourish the communities in Aitkin County! Come out and connect with, learn from and work alongside local farmers on projects they could use an extra set of hands with. You'll also get to experience the vibrant community of Aitkin County - visiting the Aitkin Farmers Market, an art gallery and more - and see what they are doing to support local food systems in the area. The trip will also include an eye-opening tour of American Peat Technology on the outskirts of Aitkin where they harvest peat and also support the local farming community. This will be an awesome showcase of a determined community who is building resilience with less resources than many.

Looking for a way to learn more about native species, support small farms, or just spend a Saturday outside? Join MNSEED Project and Wild Farm Alliance on August 15 at our first annual Pasture Bioblitz event! A Bioblitz is an event where volunteers come together to identify as many plants and insects as possible in a limited time to gauge the biodiversity of an area. No experience, no problem - we will have experts onsite as well as use technology to identify species.

Moorhead area farm experience - July 24-26. Many people don't realize there's a vibrant community of Black, Brown and Indigenous farmers and food makers growing Moorhead's ecosystem of local foods in large part through their cultural traditions. We'll spend the day helping build a passive compost system, weeding, and sowing bird-friendly cover crops to support many of these farmers, with breaks to explore Fargo-Moorhead's farmers market, community gardens, and local food scene. Village Agricultural Coop. Rochester, MN. August or September (day trip) The Village stewards community gardens and farm plots for 350+ primarily BIPOC families.

Smit Family Farm (Colfax, WI). August or September weekend or day trip. This is the farm that one of our Farm Buds grew up on where they raise Icelandic sheep, grow apples, fell and mill their own lumber.

Round River Farm / Wolf Ridge Environmental learning center - Finland, MN. September 11-13th. Weekend trip. Nestled in the lap of the Sawtooth Mountains along the North Shore of Lake Superior, Round River Farm is a solar and wind powered homestead founded on the ideal of sustainability and balance within the environment. Striving to create circular systems in their home and farm they intensively manage one acre of tilled crops (including four high tunnels), and several more acres of fruit and nut orchards which also serve as pasture for a small flock of Shetland sheep and as forage for honeybees and free range chickens. Chengwatana Community Farm (Palisade, MN) October 9-11. Lynn Mizner is a regenerative livestock farmer who is looking to someday transition her land towards a collectively farmed model. https://forms.gle/EKwCGehgtjk3gD7X7

Steger Center (Ely, MN) October 16-18. Will Steger has lived an extraordinary life, most known for his expeditions across Antarctica and the North pole. Not as many people know about his work making space for learning skills in community at his educational center near Ely, MN. Join Farm Buds over this weekend to clear some of the forrest floor from debris in the joyful company of other awesome people, including Will himself. Island Lake Farm (Deerwood, MN). Date TBD overnight trip. Jim and Audra Chamberlin have been working with livestock, managing their woods, built an earthship and are doing all kinds of things to build resilience on their farm.
