Pack Guidance and Check at Troop Meeting Thursday January 9th
This is a winter backpacking trip! The hut is a short but rigorous 1,000 foot uphill 1.6 mile hike over moderate terrain (with high probability of snow/ice). This is a chance to experience the beauty of the White Mountains without the crowds. Weather and time dependent, scouts may have the option to continue from the hut up to Cannon Mountain, a NH 4000 footer.
The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) huts provide a unique experience -- we will likely be hiking in winter weather with the opportunity to carry a lighter load due to the hut’s amenities. We will be able to use the hut’s kitchen for meal preparation. No tents are needed, but a warm sleeping bag (20C or lower) is required since the bunkrooms are UNHEATED buildings. Have extra warm clothes (especially extra socks).
Important Note: All participants must be prepared for cold weather!!! You must have sturdy, warm footwear, and you must have microspikes (the troop has some to borrow). Many layers are a necessity as well as extra socks, hats/mittens, and standard backpacking equipment.
A daypack is suggested if you want to explore the surrounding area. The main building of the hut is heated (only barely) with a wood stove, so it provides a comfortable place to hang out. Opportunities in the hut include board/card games, campfire programs, other pre-planned activities. .
