This session is designed to get you energized, informed, and on your way to becoming a derby skater. You will hand in required paperwork, talk about gear, review GRRD policies, and learn about the sport of roller derby. You will NOT be on skates for this session.
What To Bring:- A copy of driver's license- A copy of primary health insurance (please notify your instructor day-of if you do not have health insurance)- Signed waiver packet: http://bit.ly/2jXhbnz and http://bit.ly/2kpNH2G- Water Bottle- Dress in comfortable clothes and layers are suggested as practice often starts out a little chilly, but warms up quickly.- Tennis Shoes
BASIC TRAINING SESSIONS
Three times a week, every week, at the same time and location as normal GRRD practices. Skaters are expected at minimum to attend 50% of available hours of practice. The days and times are as follows:
Sundays: 9-11am newbie hour; 10am-12pm all skater practice - Rivertown Sports 2605 Sanford Avenue Southwest, Grandville, MI 49418
Mondays: 7-9pm all skater practice - Kentwood FunSpot 14 52nd Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49548
Wednesdays: 7-9pm all skater practice - Kentwood FunSpot 14 52nd Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49548
First 3 days: Classroom. Learn more about equipment, our league, the rules of roller derby, and what you'll need to succeed.
Day 4 and beyond: Basic skating skills. Stride, stop, and even fall with confidence.
Sundays from 11am-12pm advance practice - (Rivertown Sports 2605 Sanford Avenue Southwest, Grandville, MI 49418); you'll be able to skate on the "outside" of the track during this practice but not take part in drills.
Mondays and Wednesdays: 9pm-10pm advanced practice - (Kentwood FunSpot 14 52nd Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49548); you'll be able to skate on the "outside" of the track during this practice but not take part in drills.
OTHER DERBY INFO
Insurance - All skaters are required to purchase Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) insurance at the rate of $75/year.
League Dues - Grand Raggidy gives discounts to new players! BT is free for the first month. After the first month, dues are discounted to $20/ skater for 3 months. After that, league dues are $40/ month per skater ($50 if you pay after the 10th of the month). GRRD membership comes with a lot of great perks: free yoga, chiropractic services, gym membership, discounted custom mouth guards, and more. Referees, NSOs, and volunteers do no pay League Dues.
If you already have roller derby gear (helmet, quad skates, mouth guard, knee pads, wrist pads, elbow pads), feel free to bring it. Our coaches can answer any questions you might have and/or check the fit. If you don't have roller derby gear, no worries. We will show you what you'll need and where to purchase it. Grand Raggidy has some loaner gear, but we don't guarantee proper sizing or that we will have enough gear for everyone. You will be required to purchase your own gear by the end of the first month.
