We, the undersigned members of the Allegheny College community, respectfully ask the Administration and Board to discontinue Allegheny College’s affiliation with the United Methodist Church. We ask for this action due to the UMC’s affirmation of doctrine which disallows homosexuality within the church, and due to the incompatibility of this decision and the UMC’s Social Principles with Allegheny’s Statement of Community. While the United Methodist Church has been supportive of Allegheny in the past and the UMC’s commitment to education and global health work is admirable, this does not negate the negative impact that anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs have on our community. The recent UMC General Conference resulted in a vote to adopt the Traditional Plan, which prevents LGBTQ+ people from being ordained or married within the United Methodist Church. The decision to affirm anti-LGBTQ+ doctrine makes the United Methodist Church an unsuitable partner institution for Allegheny College. Allegheny’s Statement of Community confirms our commitment to “actively confront and challenge racism, sexism, heterosexism, religious bigotry, and other forms of harassment and discrimination.” We ask that the Administration and Board uphold this commitment by disaffiliating from the United Methodist Church.
