The Cornell Climate Stewards Training is a volunteer training program created to help local citizens become climate science, adaptation and mitigation leaders for their community. It provides training on these subjects and more through Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE). The 2021 training will be led by Cornell, CCE and Sea Grant staff from across NYS. The program equips local volunteers with effective communication techniques and strategies to work with local governments. Trained volunteers will complete the training by assisting in developing projects in their local community to become more climate smart.
The Cornell Climate Stewards program is modeled on other CCE programs like the Master Gardener and Master Composter volunteer programs. Volunteers will learn what is already taking place in Monroe County to combat climate change and will further help municipalities implement even more effective changes.
Cornell Climate Stewards commit to a 12 week training (24 hours of online training that spans 14 weeks), followed by volunteer work in their community. Upon completion of the 12 week training, Cornell Climate Stewards are expected to implement climate actions or projects in their community with Cornell oversight, volunteering at least 40 hours to become a certified "Cornell Climate Steward".
Space in this program is limited! Cornell Climate Stewards trainee selection is based on an applicant’s ability to attend the training sessions as well as a demonstration that they are already working with their municipality or are interested in working with their municipality on climate related projects. Preference is given to volunteers who are connected to diverse populations in rural and urban areas.
The 12-session Cornell Climate Stewards Training will be held online on:
Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm via Zoom
From September 9, 2021 – December 9, 2021
(12 weeks – skipping November 11th & 25th)
