Jagaran Mumbai Safety Survey 2013
Dear Citizen,

While the country is still recovering from the shocking Nirbhaya case, there has been yet another rape incident and this time in the so-called safe city of Mumbai. On the evening of 22nd August 2013, a young female photographer was gang-raped in broad daylight in the Mahalaxmi area of Mumbai. Apart from raising public awareness and attempting to bring about a fundamental behavioural change in society, we need our government to be vigilant and take action against these heinous crimes.

Jagaran is an awakening call for every citizen in India. The first step in this movement is to collect crowd-sourced data about the unsafe areas for women in the city of Mumbai. If you live or have lived in Mumbai, please contribute to the data collection by filling in this survey with up-to-date information. Please try to be as specific as possible, and avoid mass selection of options. If you would like to give specific data about more than one major zone, then it would be helpful if you could fill the survey twice (in terms of data analysis).

The results of this survey will form the basis of a citizen-led public safety mapping system and will be accompanied by a petition to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to take our voices and the results of this citizen survey seriously. Even though the survey is specific to Mumbai, this petition fights for a larger cause - to protest against sexual violence all over India. By starting and succeeding in one city, we can hope to have a snowball effect and spread the movement to other cities in India. We need the government to support citizen-led initiatives such as public safety mapping systems, and take appropriate and timely action to ensure the safety of every girl and woman in Mumbai, and hope to see the change reflected all over India. Please sign the petition here: http://tinyurl.com/ksjctbh

We can no longer be silent spectators to the unacceptable acts of sexual violence that are being committed against girls and women everyday. This country is our home and we need to ensure that is a safe place for every girl and woman. You can make a difference. Take a stand now!

Thank you for your support.

Yours,
A Mumbaikar. A woman. A young Indian citizen who wants to make a change.
