Sanctuary is the safety team that supports the burn community's psychological well-being. Our volunteers are trained to provide peer support, active listening, validation, and comfort to both participants *and volunteers* that are experiencing emotional distress, disorientation, grief, or mental/physical fatigue. We offer a safe space of temporary refuge where Flipizens can regroup in order to return to the Burn in an improved state of mind.
We operate 24/5 throughout the event and in coordination with other safety teams including Rangers and Medical (PETs).
No mental health experience is required to volunteer as a Listener or Shift Lead.
**Annual training is required for all positions.**
*Listeners provide the majority of Sanctuary's peer support. Shifts are 6-hours. We request 2, 6-hour shifts.
*Shift Supervisor (requires experience as a Listener) support Listeners, manage the Sanctuary space, and coordinate over the radio with other safety teams and the MHAs. Shifts are 6-hours. We require 2, 6-hour shifts.
*MHAs (requires experience and license) are on call for 1, 12-hour shift. MHAs are contacted for escalated situations and to provide relief to Shift Leads and Listeners.
