Old Rag Day Hike
Trip Leaders: Philip Tateyama + Lauren Mitchell
Sign up and Cancellation Date: Wednesday, April 2
Destination:
Old Rag is a large, outlying mountain that stands alone in the Blue Ridge range just outside of Shenandoah National Park’s formal boundary. It climbs to a healthy 3,291 feet and features prominent rock features that offer some great climbing or bouldering.
Details:
The day will begin at 7:30am on Saturday. Please meet the guides in the Marvin Center Great Hall by the glass tables. We will drive to the hiking location, approximately 2 hours away, and begin hiking on the famous 8 mile loop. We will break for lunch on the summit. Please pack and bring your own lunch as food will not be provided. Weather and time permitting, the group will summit Old Rag for some spectacular views and then return to their van in order to leave before dusk. The van will arrive back to campus at approximately 7pm, or sooner.
Description of Activity:
Come join us for a day of hiking with GW TRAiLS. The Old Rag hike is a trademark favorite for DC hikers and features challenging rock scrambles and stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley. Located in the heart of Shenandoah National Park the mountain trail has a fun 2 mile section of scrambling and sliding through and around granite boulders on the way to the summit. Please pack and bring your own lunch as food will not be provided. It is wise to carry at least a small daypack – like a bookbag – for personal supplies, food, and water. Therefore, on this trip you can expect some strenuous activity included not only in the physical act of walking over steep and often uneven terrain, but also the additional strain of carrying a bookbag or similar pack. Weather conditions may result in rain, fog, exposure to the sun, and changes in temperature as elevation is gained on the trail so please dress appropriately! We suggest layering and bringing a rain jacket just in case. Participants should also be aware that this particular hike may call for the use of hands to aid hiking and climbing over rocky and rough terrain. The dangers involved include losing your balance and falling, musculoskeletal fatigue and injury from the strenuous nature of the trail and the pace of the hike, and illness resulting from forgetting to stay hydrated, being too exposed to the sun, and lack of nutritional sustenance.
While measures have been taken by TRAiLS and its Guides to minimize these risks, it is the responsibility of the participant to be advised of the risks, accept responsibility for them, and to comply with all recommendations made by the TRAiLGuide regarding the hiking situation and personal safety. Failure to do so may result in the dismissal of the individual from that particular trip, as well as from future TRAiLS activities.
