"The 100-Layer Flock on Pasture"
A project of the Small Farm Guild, Twilight Tours are an opportunity for area farmers to learn from each other’s practices through a series of farmer-led workshops. At this event, you’ll get a snapshot of a farm other than your own and get a close up view of Bluestem Farm, a CSA farm in Antrim County specializing in organic vegetables and pasture-raised pork, eggs, and chicken. Bluestem Farm was recently awarded a SARE grant to study the most efficient size for a pasture-raised layer flock. This twilight tour will focus on their trials with 3 different flock sizes. The tour will also showcase their newly designed "chicken ships", which move smaller, 100-layer flocks efficiently without the use of machinery.
Twilight Tours are an opportunity for area small farmers to learn from one another’s practices through a series of tours and farmer-led workshops. Farm tours are particularly valuable for beginning farmers as a way to build relationships, observe a wide variety of management styles and find support from a peer network. Upcoming twilight tours will have a unique theme, depending upon the farm. Following the tour will be plenty of time for Q&A.
Ages 18+ please.
