Crawlers: From the Fields to Outer Space
The invention of the tractor would revolutionize the way Americans farmed. The evolution from animal power to mechanically powered farming was instrumental in our country’s farmland expansion at the turn of the century, shaping America as we know it today. As agriculture pushed further West, farmers faced traction issues in the tender, rich soils of California with their wheel tractors. Farmers needed a new system in order to traverse the spongy terrain and the answer would come in the form of the track-type tractor or “crawler.” Defined by its use of tracks instead of wheels, the continuous track system not only helped with the expansion of farmlands - track vehicles were also responsible for building our interstate highways and extracting and transporting natural resources, tipping the scales in our favor during WWI and putting man in outer space. In this segment we will explore the American crawler from its early beginnings to their modern-day usage.
