Monday, February 10th: OPENING NIGHT: Turtle Island: Blood and Water by Layla Staats
Doors open: 6:00PM
Program starts: 6:30PM
  • Opening and water song with Elder Mary Lou Smoke
  • Blood and Water: A Reclamation Story by Layla Staats (23 mins), followed by a q&a with the director
  • We will engage in an interactive water action activity to bring mindfulness and gratitude to our sacred relationship with water
  • Light snack and refreshments will be available outside the theatre

Blood and Water: A Reclamation Story is a short film that shares the story of Layla Staats on her path to reclaim her Mohawk identity. As a generational survivor of residential schools, they took her culture from her, but watch her story as she takes it back. And it all started with the water.

Layla Staats is Mohawk, Turtle Clan from the Six Nations of the Grand River. She is an immensely talented musician and film maker with a powerful vision and passion for storytelling. She is also a land defender and water warrior.

  • Followed by a rich panel discussion with distinguished moderator Samah al Sabbagh and panelists Haneen Abed Elnaby and Mahmoud Kouta
  • Light snack and refreshments will be available outside the theatre
  • All guests will be invited to engage in a participatory action activity allowing us to demonstrate solidarity and hope for the future as we create an art piece together
Vibrations from Gaza offers a glimpse into the experiences of Deaf children in the colonized and confined coastal territory of Gaza, Palestine. Director Rehab Nazzal is a Palestinian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Montreal, Canada and Bethlehem, Palestine focused on the impacts of settler-colonial violence. 
Bisan Owda, journalist and influencer collaborator of the media AJ+, is at the forefront of reporting, reporting, by filming with her phone, the daily life of Palestinians to the world since October 7, 2023, the start of the war and devastation from Gaza. Owda's storytelling style and resilience have captured international attention, with her work widely covered by international media. She received an Emmy Award in 2024 for her outstanding coverage of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
