IHE is an initiative by healthcare professionals and industry to improve the way computer systems
in healthcare share information. Systems that support IHE Integration Profiles, standards-based
messages for communicating data such as physiologic parameters, work together better, are easier
to implement, and help care providers use information more effectively. The goal is efficient
delivery of optimal patient care.

The IHE Patient Care Device (PCD) domain was formed in 2005 to address the integration of medical
devices into the healthcare enterprise, from the point-of-care to the EHR, potentially resulting in
significant improvements in patient safety and quality of care. This survey is intended to assist in
guiding the future efforts of IHE PCD profile development.
