2016 National Character & Leadership Symposium at the United States Air Force Academy Student Nominations
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues:

The Institute for Leadership Education at Wartburg seeks your assistance in the nomination of second-year or third-year students to attend the 2016 National Character & Leadership Symposium at the United States Air Force Academy, February 24-26, 2016 in Colorado.

The opportunity for Wartburg students to participate in this highly selective symposium is the result of contributions provided by Mark and Peggy Baldwin.  Mark, a graduate of the Air Force Academy, together with his classmates provided initial funding to create the symposium.  Mark and Peggy have provided financial resources to support the participation of Wartburg students in the symposium.  Fred Waldstein, Director of the Institute for Leadership Education, and Ashley Lang, Assistant Director of the Institute for Leadership Education and Director of the Baldwin Fellows Program are responsible for program administration.

The ILE will select four second-year or third-year students this year to attend the conference. These students will ideally come from diverse academic backgrounds and have a demonstrated commitment to leadership and service. We are especially interested in identifying students engaged in interdisciplinary academic programs (e.g., ACES, Environmental Studies, Leadership, Peace & Justice, Scholars Program, Social Entrepreneurship, and Women’s Studies) and in co-curricular activities (e.g., intercollegiate athletics, music ensembles, student government).

All nominees will be asked to provide the following information:
A statement on their understanding of leadership and its value in promoting civic engagement;
A record of achievement as engaged servant leaders consistent with the mission of Wartburg College; and
A proposed project or set of activities they hope to complete consistent with the Wartburg definition of leadership, “taking responsibility for our communities, and making them better through public action.”

Additionally, the students will be expected to share about their experience when they return to campus.
