Why?
There is a lack of research about the impact of racism and discrimination on the health and wellbeing of young people, and in particular, for two specific groups - 1. South Asian women with a disability and 2. Black men with experience in the care system. With this study, we would like to work with young people from these two backgrounds and explore their experiences of health and wellbeing using photography and other creative outlets.
What will we do?
The project will involve a series of about 6 workshops held once a week over a six-week period, with each session lasting approximately between 1 to 2 hours. We will talk about different aspects of your life and how racism might impact them. We will be using creative methods such as photography to capture your lived experiences. Towards the end of the project, we will organise an exhibition of your work (it will be optional to participate in the exhibition)
What will we achieve?
We want to understand and identify the wider structural barriers that impact young people's health and wellbeing along with what systems they find supportive. We want to ensure that the voice of young people, particularly from ethnically minoritised communities reaches to appropriate authorities, organisations and individuals.
- What to expect from the study as a participant?
We value your time and participation. Each participant will receive a gift card (minimum £25 per session) and reasonable travel allowance for each session. Moreover, we aim to create a safe platform for you to be able to share your stories and experiences. We also sincerely hope to provide you with skills such as self advocacy and creative methods, such as photography, along with giving you an opportunity to get a sneak peak into some of our other projects.
