Sometimes it amazes me that we have deployed human intelligence. The one thing we all know about humans is that you can never really tell what they are thinking and they can do just about anything. And yet most of us behave pretty well most of the time.

Think about life over the past week or so. Check the items below that you have done at least once this week.

said good morning to someone

allowed someone to pass in front of you

made an effort not to pass gas

made eye contact while talking with someone

thought about what it would be appropriate to wear

did not cheat on an assignment

paid for something that you purchased

had breakfasty foods for breakfast;waited your turn

answered a question you didn’t feel like answering

refrained from correcting someone even though they were wrong

smiled at someone you didn’t particularly like

followed a rule even when no one was watching

held back a rude or sarcastic remark

thanked someone out of politeness rather than genuine gratitude

offered help without being asked

chose not to share a controversial opinion

changed your tone of voice depending on who you were talking to

cleaned up after yourself in a shared space

checked your appearance before entering a social situation

refrained from picking your nose

lied for the sake of kindness

told someone “it’s fine” when it wasn’t, because you didn’t want to escalate

feigned interest in something to be polite

looked something up instead of guessing

stopped yourself from doomscrolling

made a decision based on how it would affect someone else

kept quiet because there were other people around

acted friendlier than you were actually feeling

went along with the group despite not feeling it...

tried not to eavesdrop

tried to not look like you were eavesdropping

told someone they had spinach on their tooth or something similar

got embarrassed when your emotions were on display

engaged in reciprocity (pay it forward, do a good turn as others have done for you, etc.)
