Cornerstone Summer Institute Counselor Application
The Cornerstone Summer Institute is an eye-opening weeklong summer program for high school students (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) that takes place at the University of Virginia. Students will explore grounds, Charlottesville, and historic sites (Monticello, Montpelier, etc.) to learn about slavery and its legacies, meanwhile developing thinking skills that prepare them for success in college and beyond. The program focuses on uncovering the history of the area through historical investigation, archaeological excavation, and community engagement.
Counselors of this camp are not just counselors in a traditional sense (making sure everyone's on the bus, etc.)--they are facilitators of learning who help students reckon with their own racial identities and their place in the world. Each counselor will lead a project group of 5-6 campers and serve as a role model for all.
The Institute will take place from June 20 to June 26, 2020. Counselors will arrive at the camp on Thursday, June 18th for training. They will also participate in training activities during the spring semester.
Counselors will receive a stipend for the week of the camp. All meals and housing will be covered in addition to the stipend.
Applications for counselors will be due by Friday, February 14th 2020 by 11:59pm.
