My Favorite Athlete

One of the most inspiring athletes for me is Greysia Polii, a former Indonesian badminton player. She was known not only for her powerful smashes and agility on the court but also for her perseverance throughout her career.

Greysia started her badminton journey at a very young age and faced many ups and downs. Despite injuries and team changes, she never gave up. Her most remarkable moment came during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she and her partner Apriyani Rahayu won the gold medal in women’s doubles, making history for Indonesia. What I admire most about her is her leadership and positive attitude. Even after retiring, she remains active in promoting sports and mentoring young athletes in Indonesia. For me, Greysia is not just an athlete, but a true role model.

Question:

Why do you think the writer chooses to describe Greysia Polii as a "true role model" instead of just a "great athlete"? Support your answer with evidence from the text.

My Inspiration on the Track

If I had to choose one athlete who truly motivates me, it would be Muhammad Zohri, the Indonesian sprinter. What makes him stand out is not just his speed, but his humble beginnings and determination to succeed.

Zohri grew up in Lombok, in a very modest family. He trained using limited equipment and often ran barefoot. But none of that stopped him. In 2018, at just 18 years old, he shocked the world by winning the gold medal in the 100-meter race at the U-20 World Athletics Championships in Finland.

His victory wasn’t just about winning — it symbolized hope and pride for many Indonesians. I remember watching the video of him crossing the finish line and holding the Indonesian flag. It made me feel proud to be from the same country.

Even after his success, Zohri remained grounded and continued to train hard. He once said in an interview, “I want to prove that Indonesians can compete with the world’s best.”

Question:

Which part of the text shows that Zohri’s success is not only about winning a race, but also has a deeper meaning for Indonesian people? Explain your reason.

Two Different Champions

I admire both Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, two amazing tennis players from different generations. Serena Williams is known for her power, determination, and strong personality. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and has inspired millions of athletes, especially women and people of color. Serena often speaks out about gender equality and racial justice, making her voice heard beyond sports. Naomi Osaka, on the other hand, is quieter but equally powerful on the court. She has won several Grand Slam titles too. Naomi is known for her calm and thoughtful nature. She once withdrew from a major tournament to take care of her mental health, a bold decision that sparked global conversations about athlete well-being. Both athletes have left a strong mark, not just by winning, but by standing up for what they believe in.

Question:

If you could choose only one of these athletes as a role model for young people today, who would you choose, Serena Williams or Naomi Osaka? Explain your choice by comparing their qualities and impact.

4.   The Fighter Who Inspires

Muhammad Ali was not just a boxer, he was a symbol of courage and confidence. He was known for his fast footwork, sharp punches, and clever words. In the ring, he moved like lightning and fought with strength and strategy. But what made Ali special was not only his success in sports. He spoke out about important issues like racism and justice. Even when people disagreed with him, he stayed strong in his beliefs. Ali once said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’”
His story is not just about winning fights — it’s about fighting for what’s right.
