Literary Magazine Application2021-2022
This form is automatically collecting emails from all respondents.Change settings
WHAT IS LITERARY MAGAZINE?
Connotations is a student-directed class that reviews student writing of all forms through a democratic process and decides which pieces will fill the year’s volume. By filling out this application, you have accepted the responsibility to be an individual member of the class and work towards the group’s common goal: creating an honorable representation of our school’s writing and creativity. While cooperation with others is a crucial element, individualism has its place in the reviewing process, where all opinions are shared and evaluated vocally. In addition, consider that you will be expected to follow directions from student editors and work well with your peers.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR IN A STAFF MEMBER?
We are looking for 9th-11th grade students who love to write.  We want people who are distinctly themselves, but who can also admit that we are in high school and not every piece is the next great American short story.
Our goal is to create a diverse staff that is open to other people’s writing and ideas. Additionally, staff members should be able to tell the difference between good and bad writing – or at least be able to tactfully defend your opinions. Participation in the literary discussions is central to the reviewing process, but so is an eye for graphic design (which plays a big part in the actual production of the magazine). Once you are on staff, you will be required to submit your own writing, art, and photography weekly for review and collect writing and art from students outside of the staff. You can submit art, photography, and music for review, but the majority of your weekly submissions must be writing.

HOW DO I APPLY?

This application is due Wednesday, January 31. You will answer questions that reveal who you are, attach samples of your own writing, consider elements of graphic design, and critique the two included pieces. If you have questions about the application, don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Stueart (katie.stueart@g.fayar.net). You will also be required to submit two teacher recommendations, one from your current English teacher and another from a teacher of your choice.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS AFTER APPLICATIONS ARE SUBMITTED?
You will be notified by email or text whether you have been selected to move forward to an interview,  where you will partake in a mock-review session among other applicants - similar to how a typical class would run. The interviews are very INFORMAL. We will review and critique one writing piece, one photo piece, and an art piece. You will be notified whether you have been chosen for the staff by February 17.

Reviews
Closely read the following two pieces and critique them. Based on your critiques of the piece, decide whether you would consider or reject them.  Explain your critiques in the space below, and try to critique based on the quality of the work as you see fit.

Some guiding questions:  Is there a clear voice? If not, how could this piece be developed better? How easy was the concept to grasp? Did you understand the theme? Was there grammar or spelling mistakes? What was the diction (word choice) like? Did it seem appropriate for the subject?
Uncle Geoff Dies
Peter came downstairs for breakfast on Saturday, sleepy, untalkative. His mother flipped pancakes on the stove. His father sat, reading a weekly status update from the office.
“Uncle Geoff died last night. I know because I had a dream about it.” Father looked up from the WSU at his wife.
“Peter, that’s an awful thing to say about your uncle. Don’t be rude at the breakfast table,” said Mother.
“I’m not being rude; I’m just saying what I had a dream about.”
“Well it’s morbid, Pete,” his father said sternly.
“I’m not trying to be murbid.”
“Morbid.”
“Morbid. Kinda rhymes with porridge.” Peter looked at his father and his father looked back silently. Man, that kid’s all kinds of messed up.
The phone rang. Mother grabbed the receiver and held it to her ear, twisting the cord around her hand. She nodded silently.
“Who is it, honey?”
“My brother. He says Aunt Georgiana passed away last night.”
“Oh, lord.”
Peter looked displeased. Not displeased, more confused.
“Peter, why are you making that face? Is it because you dream-murdered your aunt?”
“I just thought that I had a dream about Uncle Geoff, not Aunt Georgiana. Kinda weird, huh?”
“Yeah, pretty weird, son. Just - next time let’s try to be a little more accurate.”
“It’s not my fault, Dad.”
“Jesus, Dan, what did you just say to Peter?”
“It was a joke! A little joke.”
“Are you trying to blame this on your son?”
“No. And I think it’s a bit ridiculous of you to try and draw that insinuation out of a little comment. That isn’t what I was implying at all. I’m pretty sure it isn’t Peter’s fault that his Aunt is dead.”
She hung up the phone and served breakfast.
Three hours later the phone rang again.
“Well, that’s odd…” said Mother.
“What is it?”
“Apparently, Aunt Georgiana woke up suddenly in the back of her ambulance. She must have been in some kind of semi-coma. Anyway, she’s fine. But Geoff was sitting next to her when it happened, and a blood vessel popped in her brain.”
“Well, I’ll be damned.”
Just then, Peter walked in from the television room.
“Peter, looks like you were right on the money. Good work, son.”
They high-fived and had a great Saturday.

i won’t ever fail you

promises on the city lights

distant wishing dusts

tear myself apart

experimentally

for the sake of art

cursed with farewells

and no proper start

this tiny dot of a being

insistently called i

dragging along the shore

games of aim searching

at every footstep set

crushing pavements

resenting, revenging

in spite of a heart of gold

what for?

Spread Review
Evaluate the provided spread (page layout). Be sure to evaluate various aspects of the pieces (mood, theme, etc.) and how well they worked together to make a cohesive spread. You should also evaluate certain visual design elements of the spread itself. For this review, do not Consider or Reject; instead, do your best to provide a thorough evaluation written directly on the spread
