 Red House Residency 2026 Application
Welcome to the Red House Residency application!

This residency was initiated in 2020 to offer emerging and established women artists an opportunity for time dedicated to pursuing their art in a quiet, secluded place.

The residency house is located in rural Millboro, Virginia in a 100+ year old four-room, one bedroom, one bath camping cottage with modern furnishings and Wi-Fi.  There is a newly constructed building across the driveway which is the farm shop, and a garage apartment.

There are 4 residencies awarded each year, except for in 2026 because of family commitments in June.
We look forward to reviewing your work. Thank you for taking the time to share it with us.

Sincerely,

Amanda McGuire

Artist's Statement
My name is Rachel Uchizono and I live in Roanoke, VA.  I think my work inspires a joyful connection with nature.  I am attracted to organic shapes.  My favorite subjects are trees, water and distant mountains.  My passion is my garden and painting flowers and seasonal fruit.  Lilacs in the early spring, then peonies, Zinnia and dahlia in the fall, and branches from my persimmon tree.  My attachment to certain objects are in my still life paintings: the geisha vase, the delft bunny cup and Chinese opium jars.  I love vivid color and am attracted to violet blues and candy orange. The most successful paintings have poetry and joy conveyed.  That is my goal when I paint, to make an impression of poetry and joy.
My process is finding a subject that brings me that connection.  I need to relate to a landscape or still life with an emotional feeling that I want to share with the viewer

Your Residency Plan
How do you plan to make use of the residency?
What will you do to advance your art process while you are here?  How will this setting enhance your your artistic process?
(Max 500 words)
The setting looks amazing and I would like to paint on location.  I am a plein air painter by training and have been looking for scenes to paint in Virginia.  Being immersed and spending two weeks getting to know the area is the best way to paint.  My artistic process is to commit to painting every day for an extended period of time.  As a painter I get very warmed up and the process evolves to a higher level.  Being able to focus and have that time is truly a gift.
