About the program
Week of July 6th - July 9th: high contrast in black and white
Checkerboards, pandas, dice, dominos, mimes, penguins, Oreos, old movies, zebras, pianos, puffins, skunks, soccer balls, yin-yangs, badgers: we’re coming for you.
Join us for a week of material exploration in contrast through printmaking and fiber arts. We will play with monotypes on cotton, relief printing, and print a collaborative sequential narrative. We will use a limited palette to play with high contrast, low contrast (oooh, white on white!!), density, opacity, translucency. We will play with abstract compositions of light and shadow, foreground and background, positive and negative. Hand skills will come into play with appliqué stitching and relief printing our cutouts. We will try our hands at rug punching. Finish the week with your own printed personal pouch or pillow! Come explore the intersection of these two media with us. It’s going to be so fun!
Week of July 13th - July 16th: color studies
Paisley, plaid, ikat, Andy Warhol, color theory, Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly: all color is relative!
We will explore color, patterns and texture through printmaking and textile processes. Building on skills from week 1 (but not exclusive to students who can only do week 2!), we will make printed matrixes for experimenting in composite images. We will use a printing press, block print on fabric, and work in various printmaking materials to make additive and reductive printing blocks. Working in iterative images, campers will explore elements of color, saturation, and color mixing. Campers will build their own patterns and abstract works - plaids! Color mixing in weaving! Multi-colored block printed fabric! We will be working individually and collaboratively to make something bigger than anything one of us can make alone. End the week with a portfolio exchange of printed patches and quilted group flags!
