🔍 Workshop Overview

This experiential skills workshop is designed for English-speaking helping professionals who want to deepen their Schema Therapy practice in face of highly experiential avoidance or emotionally inhibited clients

Dates: 11 March 2026 and 18 March 2026 (Wed)

Time: 9-12 am (London Time) / 10-1 pm (Netherland Time) / 5-8 pm (Hong Kong Time) / 8-11 pm (Sydney Time)

Trainer: Beatrice Ng-Kessler, Registered Clinical Psychologist from UK and HK, a Certified Mindfulness Trainer from Canada, and ISST accredited Advance Certified Schema Therapist (Individual), Supervisor/Trainer.  She is experienced in working with very emotionally inhibited clients, especially those influenced heavily by their own cultural background. 


🧩 Workshop Objectives

  • Understand common schema presentations in Chinese clients

  • Enhance awareness of therapists’ own schema and its interaction with Chinese clients

  • Build cultural sensitivity when preparing for experiential interventions

  • Develop skills in delivering chair work and imagery in emotionally complex situations

  • Learn how to work with shame within the shame culture, unique parental modes, and emotional avoidance in Chinese contexts

📚 Workshop Outline 

Day 1: Understanding Cultural Influences & Preparing for Experiential Work

1. Schema Manifestations in Chinese Culture

  • Emotional/experiential avoidance

  • Interpersonal hierarchy & judgment expectations

  • Subjugation, self-sacrifice & enmeshment

  • Mode reinforcement patterns

  • Video teaching with small group discussion

2. Therapist Reflection: Cultural Schemas Within Ourselves


3. Preparing for Experiential Work


a. Building Trust in Hierarchical Contexts

  • Creating safe and non-judgmental spaces within this culture

  • Holding authority without intimidation

  • Welcoming sharing, including oppositional opinions and ideas

b. Addressing Emotional Avoidance

  • Identifying emotional avoidance and distress

  • "Slices of emotion" skill to build tolerance
  • Chair work techniques for desensitization

  • Includes video demo + duo practice

Day 2: Delivering Culturally-Aware Experiential Interventions


4. Delivering Chair Work and Imagery for Chinese Clients

a. Parent-Child Dynamics & Inner Critics

  • Differentiating demanding vs. punitive parent modes within this culture

  • Guilt-inducing cultural messages from parents

  • Working with inner critics rooted in family systems

  • Empathic confrontation through imagery/chair work

  • Includes video demo + duo practice

b. Working with Shame in a Collectivistic Culture

  • Recognizing shame in the shame culture

  • Identifying shame-related coping modes

  • Self-compassion as a healing tool

  • Includes video demo + duo practice

👥 Who Should Attend?

This workshop is for English-speaking helping professionals who are familiar with the Schema Therapy model or have at least completed Level I training.
