Sign on – letter calling for a global plan to phase out fossil fuels in response to COP29, US election

View full letter

We are not where we need to be. Despite overwhelming evidence, our global response to the threat of climate change remains dangerously inadequate. Fossil fuels are the primary cause of this crisis, yet many governments – even those who claim to be 'climate leaders' – continue to approve new coal, oil and gas projects.

Enough is enough. We must stop expanding the problem. We need your help to make this clear.

In mid-November, world leaders will gather at the UN Climate Talks for the 29th time, many of the world's most wealthy nations will also gather at the G20 in Rio.

Neither of these meetings are on track to forge a new global agreement to ending the expansion of coal, oil and gas – and many blockers will be in the room stalling any attempts to focus on phasing out fossil fuels.

In this context, hundreds of government leaders, academics, Nobel laureates, actors, artists and thoughtleaders are joining forces today call on governments to chart a new course to a safer future by joining the 14 nation-states spearheading the push to negotiate a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty as a complementary plan that will help us meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

But we need your help build momentum behind this proposal and secure the support from more governments. Similar efforts have led to global agreements that saved the ozone, phased out landmines and banned nuclear weapons. Join us in pushing for a global plan to transition away from fossil fuels today by signing this open letter which will be launched at the end of COP29 on November 22.
