Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) recruits and trains approximately 35 students each year to become IRS certified in tax preparation. Students then volunteer in Norristown to complete over 1000 tax returns and bring back over 1.1 million dollars in tax refunds. By doing this, students make a direct impact on the Norristown community and help combat income inequality.
Volunteers are required to attend 4 1.5 hour training sessions in the Fall semester, complete an IRS-sponsored online test during winter break, and volunteer at least one evening per week for five hours (commute time included) in the Spring semester.
Abide by the volunteer responsibilities
Have good interpersonal skills with a desire to work in the community
Have good organization and time management skills
Be responsible and dependable
Spanish speakers are especially encouraged to apply, due to the high percentage of Spanish speaking individuals in the Norristown Area.
