Historical and Political Approach to Levantine Music - Class description:
This class offers a historical and political approach to Levantine music and the changes that shaped it from the end of the 19th century until today. The class includes the controversial questions regarding the music changes, the role of the colonization in shaping the public taste and the hearing system, and the commonly shared terminologies of the Nahda (Renaissance), the modernity, the authenticity, the evolution of the music and the modernization of the Levantine music, and some other genres.
This class relies on exchange and discussions.
Teaching Method:
- Presentation of the historical and political impact on the Levantine music- Presentation and discussion of terminologies related to the field
The class is offered through written and visual materials and audio examples.
A space for discussions and questions is provided to participants.
This class is dedicated to everyone who’s interested in Levantine music and the cultural and political changes in Bilad Ash-sham. It doesn’t require previous knowledge in music or music performance. Also, it is convenient for participants who attended the “Introduction to Levantine Music” course by me’zaf.

Areej Abou Harb is a cultural manager and researcher. She is the co-founder and director of me'zaf and the director of Madrasat al-Musiqa. She is a PhD candidate at the Université Lumière Lyon 2 in the field of cultural history of Bilad Ash-Sham and a master's holder in the conception and management of cultural projects from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3. Her interest covers the Levantine music industry, the access to culture, the mobility of artists and cultural actors, the music in coffeshops, and the policies and funding of culture.
me'zaf is a musical cultural initiative founded in Beirut in 2015. me'zaf's main focus is the authentic music of the Levant and the world, trying to create research projects and musical activities that can reintegrate this music in our current scene, not as a museum product, but as a contemporary creation tool. me'zaf believes in the necessity of having a platform for authentic music in the Levant and ensuring the presence and reach of the Levantine authentic music in the world. On the other hand, me'zaf conceives and designs its activities to be accessible and to reach different categories.
