Introduction

The main aim of the proposed workshop is to create a platform of collaboration on digital healthcare solutions for ‘Transforming Health and Care Beyond the Hospital’ – one of the key themes set by UKRI. One of the goals of digital healthcare is to assist its users by providing timely information about their health and medical conditions. Smart healthcare assists in the remote monitoring of patients as well as the reduction of treatment, improving the patient quality of life and experience.

Smart healthcare is a socio-technical challenge, and therefore, this hackathon aims to foster collaboration within an interdisciplinary community to enable co-creation in the area of digital health.

The innovation idea developed during the hackathon should aim to meet one (or more) of the following goals:

  • Making better use of data in smart homes for improving digital health technologies
  • Reduce differences among social classes in terms of access to digital health technologies
  • Improve access  to and usability of digital health solutions in older age groups
  • Eliminate barriers to access to digital health solutions for disabled or differently-abled people
Whether you’re a technology or design enthusiast, a healthcare specialist, or this is your first hackathon; we hope you’ll join and help us make a meaningful impact on healthcare issues.

Hackathon Information

The hackathon will run on two days in May:

  1. 1st day - Online, 12/05/2023
  2. 2nd day -  In-person at Brunel University, 18/05/2023
On the 2nd day of the hackathon, the prototypes developed, and future plans for research grant applications will be presented to a panel. The proposed judging criteria will be in equal parts the following technology, impact and presentation.  First prize and two-runner up vouchers (£600 and £200) will be awarded to participating teams.

The hackathon will aim to create a free-thinking and collaborative environment involving 25-30 participants using a mix of online collaboration and communication tools and face-to-face meetings, talks, and panels. We expect this 2-day event to be especially suited to researchers in academia, industry, and the public sector specialising in mobile health, digital health, privacy-enhancing technologies, user interface design, and health policy. We are looking for researchers who enjoy stepping outside their area of expertise or interest and enjoy creative activities and teamwork. The hackathon requires you to brainstorm with other researchers you may not know. We aim to chart out some of the challenges in this space and come up with initial ideas for design solutions that underpin future collaborative opportunities.

As one day of this hackathon will be run fully online, we expect participants to have access to a laptop and broadband Internet connection. Please indicate if there are any limitations to your participation, and we will aim to assist the best we can.

See the project website for a tentative schedule of the workshop.
