Attention everyone! We (Gwen and Eileen) are looking to be replaced (hiring new editors for the next year of
).
The position of Editor runs for a full year, beginning at the start of the academic year in September and continuing through the summer. Traditionally, Icarus has been run by just one or two people — which is quite unusual for a publication of its size.
Of course, you're welcome to bring someone else on board (a designer, archivist, assistant, etc.). We hired a design editor for our most recent issue, whereas other editors have chosen to hire an assistant for managing the administrative side of the magazine. With that in mind, we encourage you to carefully consider the time commitment involved in taking on this role.
The position involves reading and responding to nearly a thousand submissions three times a year, designing each issue, sourcing featured artists, managing emails and social media, organizing collaborative projects, planning launch events, and more. While the workload can vary depending on your work style, we found it roughly equivalent to an intense part-time job — a hugely rewarding and enjoyable one, of course! Clear communication and good time management made it manageable for us.
We’re looking for an individual who is highly efficient — a strong writer, a sharp editor, and a meticulous proofreader. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who cares deeply about the publication: someone passionate about showcasing new work, supporting artists, and preserving the legacy of the country’s oldest arts journal.
Applications close on Monday August 3rd at midnight. You’ll hear from us shortly after the application period closes regarding whether you've been invited to interview. We’re really looking forward to reading your application and are grateful for the time and thought you’ve put into it.
If you have any questions in the meantime, don’t hesitate to get in touch at icarusmagsubmissions@gmail.com.
