Riot in the Theatre
On 19th May 2013, Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets
Russes, presented the premiere of a new piece by Igor Stravinsky in Paris.
Billed as a Portrait of Pagan Russia, The Rite of Spring sat in the
centre of a very traditional evening of popular favourites. Yet it caused a
riot in the theatre. "Degenerate", "barbaric", "insane" were some of the insults hurled at the music and the choreography of Diaghilev's star dancer Nijinsky. Others, including composer Maurice Ravel, responded with cries of their own, hailing The Rite of Spring as a work of genius. Many would later acclaim that momentous May evening as the birth of
Modernism.
Odyssey recreates the programme of that extraordinary and chaotic
evening.

The orchestra list (including reserve players) will be announced soon after our deadline (above), after which those players selected will be expected to request and confirm LOAs (leave of absence) from other potential work/study commitments, prioritising their agreed availability for Odyssey.
If we are unable to achieve a clear level of commitment to ensure the quality of our presentation, we reserve the right to alter the programme for the available personnel.

Once again, we are delighted to announce that we are able to offer £100 cash honorariums to each player for this project. This cash payment will be made on the day of the concert and will be contingent on the player having honoured their agreed advance commitment to the project on this Google form. Please note, we rarely allow absence from rehearsals on the evening before and the day of a performance.
