Registration: Weekly Language Workshops for Teaching in English (12 January–4 March 2024)  

Welcome to the Weekly Language Workshops for Teaching in English!

This course will give you the opportunity to practice various language skills and exchange ideas with international colleagues who are also teaching content courses in English (English as a Medium of Instruction, EMI). Just register and choose the workshop(s) that you would like to participate in. You can participate in all six 90-minute sessions or choose the specific sessions that fit your schedule and areas of interest.

A few days before each workshop, you’ll receive a welcome email with the Zoom link.

Registration is open to all professors, lecturers and instructors, as well as graduate students and administrators with teaching responsibilities who work at an Arqus University.

Certificates of participation are available upon request for those who attend at least five sessions.

Get ready to immerse yourself in the world of English grammar, vocabulary, and speaking practice for the EMI classroom and to network and exchange ideas with colleagues from the nine Arqus Universities!

Workshop Series Schedule:

1:  Friday, 12 January 2024, 1:30–3 pm (CET)
Practicing Cohesion and Flow
 – In academic texts, cohesive devices serve to link ideas and create a logical flow with and between sentences. In this workshop, we will explore the role that cohesive devices play in the creation of academic texts and presentations and practice strategies for teaching these important linguistic elements in the classroom.

2: Friday, 19 January 2024, 1:30–3 pm (CET)
Writing Skills for Teaching in English – In this workshop, participants will deepen their understanding of specific writing issues that comprise the core of advanced academic English language and content courses. In particular, this workshop will focus on writing and editing practice for assigning and correcting university coursework.

3: Friday, 26 January 2024, 1:30–3 pm (CET)
Vocabulary for Teaching in English – University students and lecturers have become increasingly aware of the need to acquire the necessary disciplinary language needed for academic success. In this workshop, we will explore ways to improve lexical choice and range in regard to subject-specific course content.

4: Monday, 29 January 2024, 3:30–5 pm (CET) 
Improve Your English Fluency – In this workshop, we will produce a short list of language issues that students need for academic success with a focus on interactive communication and refining interactive teacher and peer-feedback in advanced language practice.

5: Friday, 1 March 2024, 1:30–3 pm (CET)
Focus on Grammar for Teaching in English – This workshop is designed for teachers who want to fine-tune their understanding and use of advanced English grammar in the university classroom.

6: Monday, 4 March 2024, 3:30–5 pm (CET)
Interactive Skills Practice and Pronunciation – What is interactive teaching? In this workshop, we will practice ways that student input and teacher responses are best facilitated within the ongoing classroom discourse. The focus of this workshop will be on interactive speaking skills practice.
