Name: Stanley Cheng
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: Philanthropy Chair
Second-Choice Position: Social Events Chair
Third-Choice Position: Report Committee Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

Philanthropy Chair – Being a part of the community has been something that I enjoy doing for quite a while. After a year of e-board experience, I have a much better sense of what a philanthropy chair is involved in and want to be a part of it, from raising money to planning events for local students. Social Events Chair – If not philanthropy chair, I would like to be social events chair. I want to encourage students to get to know others in their own majors (or possibly others as well in jointevents).Iwantto create those opportunities that do not happen on a normal basis. Report Committee Chair – As a final option, I am willing to go back to the position that I had this past year in which I designed our End-of- Year report.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

Philanthropy Chair – One of the groups that we collaborate with is MESA, a group that coordinates events in the STEM field with students in the community. As my high school job, I did something similar at a local museum in Oakland. I hope to work with the MESA coordinator to create events that would include IEEE.
Social Events Chair – Having access to many of the past End-of-Year reports, I have plenty of ideas for possible social eventsandIcanthinkof other fun events to get students together for those occasional study breaks from tough courses.
Report Committee Chair – I was the one that made the report this past year and would not mind making another one.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

Philanthropy Chair – If it were possible to do something with the neighboring California Science Center, doing so would probably be something that can attract people in the community. We can also get our organization involved in Tailgate Recycling for those that do not go to every football game. It would be a great way to help with the environment while raisingmoneytodonate or fund future events. Social Events Chair – We can create an upperclassman/graduate student to freshman mentorship system to help freshmen meet those older than them, not only for educational advice but also as a friendly relationship.

Name: Franklin Cocchi
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: Vice President
Second-Choice Position: Corporate Affairs Chair
Third-Choice Position: Treasurer

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

I am interested in Vice President because I have thoroughly enjoyed the past 2 years of S- PAC, the main duty of the Vice President, and would like to organize it for others to have a similar experience next year. I would like to continue to assist the organization in this new roll.
I am interested in Corporate Affairs Chair for very similar reasons as Vice President, that is to continue to put on events for USC students to meet with recruiters and ultimately get jobs/internships. I am interested in being treasurer because I would like to do my best to make sure the IEEE chapter here at USC can fund any and all events we would like to do throughout the academic year.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

Much of my experience actually comes from being an E-Board
member of IEEE over the past two years. Two years ago I served on the End of the Year Report Committee, and this year I am currently serving IEEE as the Corporate Affairs Chair. My Corporate Affairs position this year has given me excellent insight as to how S-PAC is set up, since I was responsible for contacting a number of the recruiters that attended the event. It goes without saying that my experience as Corporate Affairs Chair this year would allow me to excel in the position next year as well. As for my qualifications for Treasurer, over the past year I have been a part of submitting applications to fund IEEE-USC events, so I have insight into how that position should be run as well.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

I would like to continue to make successful and engaging events next year, but I would also like to try and look at how we could expand as an organization. In the past, we have not had the numbers we would like at a variety of our events, so delving into why this is happening is of extreme importance.

Name: Shi Fan
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: Social Event Chair
Second-Choice Position: Philanthropy Event Chair
Third-Choice Position: End-of-Year Report Committee

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

First-Choice: I'm interested in becoming the social event chair because I've have had an experience of helping a social event for IEEE. I'm going to elaborate on that in the next question. Besides, I'm a huge sports fan and I'd love to organize some social-sports events for IEEE. I've been an intramural soccer referee in our school for a year, so I can even get refs for us!
Second-Choice: According to the events from last year, philanthropy events are basically fundraising. I have an experience of getting sponsorship, which I'm going to elaborate later on. I think I can apply the similar skills to fundraising as well.
Third-Choice: I'm interested in joining End-of-Year, because I like taking pictures and writing.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

In general, I'm active in participating IEEE events in the past year. The events include beach bonfire, quiz bowl, evening research/corporate events and so forth. Although I'm not currently on the board, I've put a fair amount of effort to get involved in the organization.
I have a particular experience that could be helpful for me to be qualified for the board. I've tried to get a sponsor for a social event of IEEE this semester already. Hearing that we would have a laser tag this semester, I asked the banker at Chase if they could offer any sponsorship while I was there for some bank issues. The banker gladly accepted to sponsor in exchange for promoting their brand among USC students. Then I contacted our president Andrea Lawler, andshereferred me to our treasurer Li Hsuan Lu, who later talked to the banker and made the deal. Chase was willing to cover all the costs for Laser Tag; however, this event has yet to be carried out, because of lack of transportation. Anyway, the point is I've learned a lot from this experience. I figured out how a social event is supposed to work, how the procedure should be, and how to get sponsorship. I could apply these skills to other events or situations as well. Most importantly, I have the willingness and passion to contribute and dedicate to our EE community.
A particular skill that I have is writing. I'm the forum administrator for travel and sports sections on the Intercollegiate Chinese Organization Network website. (www. iconunion.com) I write news and articles on a regular basis.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

For a particular social event in mind, I want to plan a bowling night for IEEE at the beginning of the coming year. EEers of different years could take this opportunity to socialize and get to know each other. I'd put it at the beginningofthenext year, because doing so would attract as many people as possible. First, we don't have too much workload at the beginning. Second, it is the best time to attract freshmen who are completely new to USC and eager to meet people. I would figure out the transportation by trying to get buses for us. Also, I would try to get as much sponsorship as possible.
For regular social events, I want to have a basketball tournament in fall and a soccer one in spring, or the other way around. I'll encourage both guys and girls to join. I personally play basketball and soccer on a regular basis. I think these two are the best team sports to be carried out on campus. They are friendly contact sports that can promote teamwork, help people socialize, and even improve friendship.

Name: Walter Iu
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: President
Second-Choice Position: Vice President
Third-Choice Position: Treasurer

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

Having been on the e- board for the past two years I've become very invested in this organization and want to continue to make this organization a beneficial and enjoyable experience for our members. Through my past experiences I've kept our members up to date and also communicated with different organizations as well as companies to collaborate on events. I want to continue this if I were president and be able to build a stronger network within IEEE. I'm very excited about the future of IEEE and hold it to a high degree of responsibility.
As president there is a lot of work that has to go in and I know I have the necessary experience I've gained this year. This year I worked closely with all of our board members to carry out their events as best as possible. We had an incredibly successful S-PAC and a variety of corporate events. In addition we had great academic talks and introduced students to different areas of research. I have many great ideas for next year which will include a new variety of corporate events, academic events, and socials events. They will be based on what our members want in addition to what I have seen to be successful in our past years. For example, S-PAC has always been a staple of our organization which would be improved on but a freshman mentoring program suggested to me this year by a general member would be something to be implemented. To read more about this see the other section for details on ideas.
Furthermore, I'm familiar with other Viterbi organizations and would be able to collaborate easily with them to expand our networks. Having attended the Viterbi Presidents Council I am able to see where our organization stands and it's representation in the Viterbi school. IEEE is a great organization and having been a student in this organization these past years I've made strong friendships and it's been a great resource. I want to make this even more accessible and efficient next year for student members and leave a strong legacy behind for the future of IEEE. In essence, I'm interested in this presidency because I believe I can organize our e-board cohesively and truly cater to the needs of our members. It's an organization I have invested myself in and also want to utilize my experience to have it strengthen our EE, CS, and CECS communities at USC.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

I've served on the IEEE board for the past two years and have significant experience and understanding of how this organization functions. My first year I attended the majority of events and created the end of year report which was a rewarding experience to really get to know what events we put on and the way we serve the members of IEEE. I understood the workings of how events function and how we've improved them over time. It was a great experience to really see what events were successful and which ones were not. It helped me gain a lot of perspective on how to make our organization better. Creating the report was a really good analysis on our organization as a whole and I truly believe that this experience made IEEE an organization I saw a lot of potential in.
This year I took on a more significant role as the Director of Communications. Managing our different accounts allowed me to see all the ways we connect with others as an organization. Through this experience I will be able to translate that to the role for presidency or vice presidency. Working closely with our current president I've learned how important communication is to the success of our organization. I've had a lot of experience and time to learn about effective communication and I believe this experience is essential to what a president, vice president, or treasurer will have to do. Contacting our general membership, some companies, and other organizations I found myself in a role that bridged our ideas as an organization and brought them to reality. As president I would continue to do this same type of communication and with the knowledge I have of all our accounts I believe I can carry out this duty in the presidency.
This would also apply if I were the vice president next year running S- PAC. I've attended S- PAC for the last two years and they were very different both with their pros and cons. Next year I would be able to be able to really take what worked effectively from both years and put on a great S-PAC. This year with very effective communication and planning we had very high attendance for S-PAC and I want to see that again next year. I would be taking on a more encompassing role of overseeing other aspects of S-PAC such as food, location, and budgeting. My experience this year though with communication and overall understanding from both years will serve as valuable assets to once again make our most popular event a success. Helping our general member obtain internships and network is at the forefront of our agenda and I believe I will be able to help in this goal.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

I have many ideas next year for IEEE through my perspective on our organization over the past years. As president I believe it's extremely important that we hold serving our general members as our foremost priority. As an e-board I want to really make use of it's collaborative effort to make our existence as an organization extremely known on campus. As in previous years we'll be tabling at the all the student involvement fairs and have a run through of the best ways to really attract students and show them the benefit of our organization.
One of the best ways to gain membership is through freshman and underclassmen which is why it would be great to build a mentoring program where older students in the organization will be able to be mentors to incoming and transfer student to show them the ropes of their respective majors. This is an idea that I've really been working on and was suggested to me by one of our general members this year. It's something I want to define which is going to both strengthen our organization and also strengthen our general community. This was a great suggestion and as president I would definitely want to be able to implement this idea and many more that I find out about through our general membership.
This leads me into my next point of really hearing the voice of our general membership. This year I've heard many great ideas by members but there wasn't a way to facilitate these ideas which is why I believe one or two general meetings a semester would be very beneficial to our organization. We would be able to introduce our e-board and implement a method in which student members can submit their ideas. I want to be able to make our organization as accessible and open to all members. I also want them to feel involved and benefitting. This general meeting is something I believe would really anchor our organization and become a cornerstone to the agenda we have.
Although this may seem minor, we did have many transportation problems this year for our events and it's something I want to take seriously for fixing next year. A small patch in transportation would be from myself being able to drive next year. As president I would take it as my highest priority to be able to be there for most of the events and definitely drive. This year we've also talked about a zipcar account which I definitely want to create for the next year.

Name: Stephen Lee
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: Report Committee Chair
Second-Choice Position: None
Third-Choice Position: None

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

I am interested in applying for the Report Committee Chair because I want to join IEEE. Since this will be my first chance of joining the IEEE Executive Board, I want to start from a smaller position and do my job well at it. In addition, I have been passionate photographer since high school, but I haven't got much chance of taking photos, so this position is perfect for me to start that passion again.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

In the past year, I was the officer of biography in NOBE, and the marketing director of ENACTUS(previously known as Student in Free Enterprise). One of my responsibility as the marketing director was to host the involvement fair, where I designed flyers, and posters using tools ranging from adobe photoshop to adobe indesign. In addition, my cinema minor and my passion toward photography has enhanced my skills in taking photography. With these knowledge, I believe that I can contribute much to the Report Committee

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

With the reputation of IEEE-USC, I believe that we can bring in more famous industry speakers, or well- known professors from other universities to better provide knowledge in the EE field to EE students. The more event, or well known speaker we bring in, the easier we can spread words about IEEE and improve the turnout rate in IEEE's events.

Name: Aaron Liu
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Freshman
First-Choice Position: Academic Affairs Chair
Second-Choice Position: Social Events Chair
Third-Choice Position: Report Committee Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

Academic Affairs Chair: I want to get more involved with the academia aspect of Electrical Engineering. As part of the ACM E- Board, I planned the Shape the CS Curriculum forum, where I spoke with Dr. Kempe regularly. With Dr. Kempe, we also created a student committee for judging the performance of incoming lecturers. Such work is appealing to me because I would be able to contribute to the Viterbi in a substantive way.
Social Events Chair: I would like to help draw not only Viterbi students but also USC students in to create a closer community.
ReportCommitteeChair: This is essentially what I am currently doing as the secretary of ACM. I complied the end of the year report mainly by myself and therefore would be more than comfortable to do it again.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

In high school I was the speech captain for my debate team. This was essentially an E-board position. I was the captain of my tennis team as well as the president of the chess team. These positions, although were not in a university, refined my leadership and communications skills. I am very cooperative and I take the time to do what needs to be done.
IncollegeIamcurrently in the E-board of the Association of Computing Machinery, also a Viterbi organization. I wrote the end of the year report for ACM and also helped plan many of the social events.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

We should host workshops on career options for EE majors. This includes finance and entrepreneurship.

Name: Li Hsuan lu
Major: Electrical Engineering (B.S.), Mathematics (B.A.)
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: President
Second-Choice Position: Treasurer
Third-Choice Position: Treasurer

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

For President: The main reason why I want to be the President of IEEE@USC is to cater the organization to you, the students of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and create events that relates to the these two majors. Being on the board, I was able to see the audience that the organization has and the role that it should play. As a current member on the e-board, I know exactlywhatour audience needs and what role IEEE@USC should play. As its name suggests, this organization has its base on you, the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science students at USC, and you are a group of very talented students who each possess many special skills of your own. I also understand that you may have a heavy academic schedule, but I will make sure that each IEEE event is attractive and specially made to your requests. The move to a more member-oriented and EE/CS-related organization is thus my main reason to run for the President this year.
For Treasurer: I was the Treasurer in this past academic year, and I have certainly enjoyed this position. My interest to run for Treasurer is thus to better what I have done in this past year. Since this was my first year being Treasurer, I was not very knowledgeable about my position and it resulted in some mistakes in my judgments. For the next year, I will want to correct those mistakes and ensure a seamless and convenient process for any board member who wants to apply for a funding board for his or her event. organization is thus my main reason to run for the President this year. Since this was my first year being Treasurer, I was not very knowledgeable about my position and it resulted in some mistakes in my judgments. For the next year, I will want to correct those mistakes and ensure a seamless and convenient process for any board member who wants to apply for a funding board for his or her event.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

For President: My experience of serving is the board makes me aware of the work that a Chairman has, and the time and effort that I need to put in to do a good job in the position. I am thus ready to release or reduce some of my current and future commitments, such as number of classes and board positions in other organizations, to better serve the role of a Chairman if elected.
A major commitment of the Chairman is the annual S-PAC event. While the Vice- Chairman is the main coordinator for the event, the Chairman also plays a big role in coordinating the different board members. I am honored to be involved in the organizing of the event this year as a Treasurer, for this has allowed me to see the responsibilities of a Chairmanbefore, during and after the event.
Another main role of the Chairman is coordinating with IEEE sectional, regional and national, and I have attended a meeting of IEEE LA Metro as the Treasurer of the organization, while also exchanging multiple emails with members in IEEE sectional and regional. Thus, I understand the relationship between the different IEEE organizations and the role that IEEE@USC plays in this relationship. This knowledge will allow me to gather more support with the other IEEE organizations, which will translate to better events for you. Examples include getting more funding and inviting better speakers.
For Treasurer: Being the Treasurer of the organization this past year, I was able to get familiar with the different funding boards in USC, notably those specific to the organization. I have made a table of the different types of deadlines with regards to the different funding boards; this has helped me and will continue helping me decide what funding board/s to apply for the respective events if elected.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

For President: My aim will be to first get people to know the existence of such an organization, and then to get people involved in the organization.
If elected, I will submit a form to student affairs to table at the involvement fair the following semester. The involvement fair is a place for students to know about the different organizations on campus, and will provide another opportunity to meet people of the Electrical Engineering or Computer Science majors who have missed the Freshman Luau, as well as meet people who may not be of the above two majors but are interested in the organization in general.
Following that, a general meeting will be held within the first three weeks of school for interested students toattend.Theywill have a chance to meet the different board members and understand the role of the organization, the different events that the organization plans, and the type of support that it can provide to students.
A mentoring program will also be done to match upperclassmen with freshman. The upperclassmen (the mentors) will provide guidance to the freshman, ensuring a smooth transition to the life of a Trojan. This will allow you (who will all be upperclassmen by next year) to meet new freshman and serve as a source of support in their first year at USC. Executive members will also communicate regularly with the mentors and the mentees to hear their opinions about the organization. This will allow your voices to be heard and you to be connected to the organization.
Last but certainly not the least, I will be also seeking out more Electrical Engineering or Computer Science related competitions and conferences, not just in USC but also in the region and send students to attend these events. This will allow you to compete in what you are good at and meet like-minded people from other schools. The general expenses for these trips will also be covered by the organization, so you can basically travel for free.
For Treasurer: I will have an open dialogue with the board member before his or her event regarding the different funding sources that he or she can choose from. I will tell the board member about each of their pros and cons and also my preference, but I will let the board member make the final decision on the funding board/s that he or she wants me to apply for that specific event.

Name: Luis Rui Mao
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Junior
First-Choice Position: Academic Affairs Chair
Second-Choice Position: Corporate Affairs Chair
Third-Choice Position: Social Events Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

Academic Affairs Chair: I want to help organizing the academic speakers series. I attend to many of those speakers series and they are a great way to learn about multiple areas of electrical engineering. However, I have noticed that number of people who attend is not very high, usually the attendees are just people from the board. If we do some more advertisement of it, there would be many more students. There are plenty of students that don't know what they want to do with their life, and these speaker series can help them learn about new options.
Corporate Affairs Chair: It is important to reach out into companies and get them involved with our campus.Students can have the chance to connect with rectruiters which is a plus for anyone looking for internships. But more importantly, it creates a relationship between the school and the company that would be mutually beneficial, increasingthe chances of any trojan to get hired.
Social Events Chair Social events are fun, I would love to organize the events, specially the sports

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

about why I am qualified. I have work before organizing and advertising events. I was in building government, and I had planned and advertised for a large variety of events, ranging from planning sport matches to fundraising events I was the intramural coordinator for Webb Tower, andIalwaysget more than enough people to play (and also win competitions in Volleyball and Soccer). I am also in the board for IEEE-HKN. We do multiple event planning as well as preparing for initiation ceremonies.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

There are multiple professors whose research sound very interesting.

Name: Blake Mason
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: Corporate Affairs Chair
Second-Choice Position: Academic Affairs Chair
Third-Choice Position: Social Events Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

Corporate affairs: I see a lot of opportunity as the chair of the corporate affairs committee. This past semester, I learned firsthand how difficult finding an internship can be. While IEEE provides many opportunities to meet professionals and network, I feel as though I could have benefitted from additional guidance regarding how to approach applications and to more network more effectively. In addition, I think that IEEE should act as a vehicle to connect students with not only large tech companies, but also with local start-ups such as those in the Silicon Beach Community. If I am elected corporate affairs chair, I would like to focus not only on tours and company campus info sessions, but also on connecting students with our surrounding entrepreneurial community in Southern California. Many of recent graduates working in start-ups could offer insight and perspective that we would likely not get otherwise. Doing so will not only offer us an opportunity to diversify our network of contacts, but also expand our horizons on engineering career paths.
Academic Affairs: I also see opportunities for the growth of IEEE as a student organization through academic affairs. Currently, IEEE is in my opinion, underutilized. Though IEEE does maintain relationships and orchestrate joint events with other engineering groups on campus (such as SWE or SHPE), it is my hope that IEEE will become a mechanism to foster interdepartmental collaboration with other student groups(such as ACM and ASBME). IEEE also has the potential to encourage engineers to become involved in USC’s numerous and multidisciplinary design teams and research groups. Electrical engineering is an inherently multifaceted discipline. I would like to expose our students to the breadth of our discipline through collaboration with those studying in other fields. In addition, this past semester I have been trying to connect with professors to pursue research opportunities, and have found making these connections challenging. As academic affairs chair, I would like to help build a network to connect students seeking research opportunities to professors looking for student researchers. A service such as this would be invaluable to students who, just as I was, are seeking research opportunities, but are unsure about how to find them.
Social Events Chair: I am interested in becoming the social events chair because I want to help students expand beyond our social circles within EE. Until this past semester, I didnotknowthemajority of EEs in my year. In the past year, I have been fortunate enough to finally get to know many entertaining and talented engineers with whom I had shared classes with for almost two years now. It is a shame that I did not meet more EEs sooner, and I know that many of my other classmates feel the same way.
I would like to help plan social events to help others pursue these oft- missed opportunities. Though we may spend hours every week with our classmates, we may never really get to know our peers on a personal level until we are able to move beyond a professional setting. I believe that IEEE is the perfect organization to help EEs connect with other EEs their year and beyond. If elected as chair of social events, I will help other EE students connect with the many other amazing engineers that we share classes with, but perhaps never were able to really get to know.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

I believe that I would be effective member on the executive board because of my experience serving on the executive board of the USC chapter of Moneythink, a national nonprofit organization. As a Moneythink mentor, I teach weekly financical literacy and entrepreneurship classes to students local high schools. Working with Moneythink has given me practical experience in leadership which is transferable to other settings, such as the executive board of IEEE. Through Moneythink, I have gained experience in working within a board, and have learned to coordinate my efforts with the other e-board members. I believe that this experience is will enable me to succeed as a member of IEEE e- board.
As Director of Outreach I have pitched Moneythink to various school principals and established relationships with counselors and educators have also created and maintained numerous relationships with local professionals over this past semester through networking and continued correspondence. If elected corporate affairs chair, my experience networking and pitching will be useful for building contacts and creating opportunities for students.
I have also been a part of a planning committee for a campus-wide event, trying to organize an event hosting local entrepreneurs for a business competition and panel. Before this semester, I lacked a clear understanding of the logistics which are requisite for a successful on-campus event, whether that be a speaker series or a social function. I believe that this experience with event planning will enable me to successfully plan academic and social events for IEEE. Before this semester, I lacked a clear understanding of the logistics which are requisite for a successful on-campus event, whether that be a speaker series or a social function. I believe that this experience with event planning will enable me to successfully plan academic and social events for IEEE.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

I hope to expand the speaker series to include a greater breadth of engineering companies ranging from large companies, such as Intel or Microsoft, which have established college recruiting programs to some of the smaller firms, which, though less established, could give an alternative perspective on the state of electrical engineering.
Also, I think it would be beneficial for students if IEEE were to connect more with regional chapters beyond the scope of academia. IEEE is the largest professional association for the advancement of technology and has a vast network of practicing engineers. While IEEE USC does a good job of connecting students with recruitment opportunities, I think that it under-utilizes the resources of the national chapter. Though I am unsure of the feasibility of this, it would be amazing if USC could reach out to a local IEEE chapter and host a mini- conference. Alternatively, next fall, IEEE has national conferences in Disneyland, Pasadena, and Irvine next fall, any one of which would provide both insight into the industry and networking opportunities to students.
Finally, IEEE could jointly sponsor an interdisciplinary design competition with a group such as ACM. Doing so, would not only further students experience with practical design, but also with working with a varied team.
Thank you for taking the time to vote today. I appreciate your support.

Name: Lisa Scaria
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: Director of Communication
Second-Choice Position: Treasurer
Third-Choice Position: Philanthropy Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

I'm interested in the Director of Communication position because I believe that I can fit all the requirements for the job. I am organized and responsible so I can maintain records and send emails accurately and on time.
I'm also interested in the position for Treasurer because I have had some experience in the process of applying for funding.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

I currently do clerical work for a professor and help maintain large records on Excel and send out emails. This experience would be useful for the role of Director of Communication.
I also serve as an Ambassador to the SWE Social Events Committee where I have seen the work that goes into getting funding for events and meetings.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

I think it would be helpful to have a general IEEE meeting once a month or at least in the beginning of each semester where members can get to know each other more. It would also be helpful to start a database on IEEE where upperclassmen could enter in their thoughts on classes and professors so underclassmen can have an idea of what to expect in the future.

First-Choice Position: Treasurer
Second-Choice Position: Webmaster
Third-Choice Position: Director of Communication

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

I am interested in becoming treasurer primarilybecauseIenjoy the responsibility that accompanies being accountable for money. I am attentive to detail, and think this is a perfect opportunity to practice professional communication skills and fundraising for the club. I am also interested in the Webmaster and Director of Communication positions because I love keeping people up to date about upcoming events and playing a part in getting people to participate in events. Actually, out of everything else I love organizing things and communicating with the club member. I feel like from a position of Webmaster or Director of Communication I could influence attendance of events and potentially convince more people to come out to IEEE happenings.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

When I entered USC, I entered as a business student. In my time as a business student, I have learned and practiced skills of communication, finance, and networking, all of which I think will benefit me if I am elected to any of the positions I am applying for. My money handling and fundraising ability extends as far as managing my family's budget and my personal school finances. In high school, I have also helped friends on executive committees resolve budgeting problems while not being on their club e- boards myself. If I cannot serve as treasurer, I would love to serve as Webmaster or Directorof Communication because I want to have an active part in communicating with the chapter. One major task I am responsible for in my fraternity is keeping track of minutes, attendance, and creating our weekly meeting report to distribute when the vice-president is absent. I have experience distributing information about weekly fraternity events, and believe I have what it takes to serve as IEEE's Director of Communication. While fraternity events do not typically involve online web forms, I have also served as group leader for my group in my Global Leadership Program class and coordinated group meetings via web forms, and also believe I would be a strong Webmaster.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

If I am elected to help serve on IEEE's executive board, my primary focus will be on marketing IEEE and improving participation at social events. Of the few IEEE events I have participated in, I have noticed a stark disparity in the willingness of the club to participate in professional events versus strictly social events. As things stand now, IEEE sees a much greater attendance at professional events like S-PAC and virtually none at events aimed at getting to know one another. In the next year, I would like to personally get to know more people in IEEE and make sure there was more a networking and get to know each other focus.

First-Choice Position: Philanthropy Chair
Second-Choice Position: Corporate Affairs Chair
Third-Choice Position: Academic Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

I have always found IEEE to be interesting. I have not participated much because of the fact that either the events were aimed more to the graduate student side or they just coincided with events I was doing with SHPE. Of the events I attended last year and this year, S-PAC was the only one that really stood out to me and everything else honestly was pretty crappy. I would like to change this. Last year, SHPE was kinda crappy last year, but got it together in second semester thanks to a few upcoming leaders. Then those upcoming leaders ended up becoming the Executive Board of the next year with myself included. Over the past year, I have been part of a major growth within our organization and the next year looks even more promising with this year looking like we are already guaranteed a few awards.
It's a lot of writing, I know, but what I mainly want to state is that I want this for IEEE also. I may be wrong and the events I have not been to may be amazing. But from the few I have seen, I haven't seen it and I want to be part of the board that starts some change. Maybe not as rapid as with my other org, but any growth is good.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

I have been part of the Public Relations Committee for SHPE my freshman year.
I became Director of Public Relations of SHPE for this year as well as being elected to Director of Public Relations for another term.
As a member of the SHPE board, I have gained quite a few contacts within corporations as well as much experience just helping our community outreach chair. If you didn't know already, our community outreach is huge where we hold 4 Day at the Museum events where we bring 100-200 students to Science Center, the biggest E-Week event "Discover-E Day" where we can bring in around 200-400 children, as well as other school tours and such where schools will be calling us to bring them to our campus.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

Try to find better balances between the undergrad and graduate focus of events.
Encourage our organization to try to team up with other organizations.
I have many other similar ideas, but they mainly come from working with SHPE and it's not until I start to interact more with IEEE that I would be able to see what ideas fit.

Name: Xinyu (Stephanie) Yi
Major: Electrical Engineering

First-Choice Position: Vice President
Second-Choice Position: Academic Affairs Chair
Third-Choice Position: President

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

I am currently the IEEE Academic Affairs Chair this year and would like to increase my involvement in IEEE next year by becoming the IEEE Vice President. I really enjoyed working with this year’s E-board in planning events and recruiting new members. If elected as the IEEE Vice President, I would start planning S-PAC (Student Professional Awareness Conference) much earlier in the fall semester. This year’s S- PAC was better than last year’s in terms of attendance and the speaker; however, the location and the pre- dinner mingling still require some improvements. Since the attendance of the event was unexpectedly high (in a good way ☺), the room in the USC Davidson Conference Center was packed. In the future, IEEE could request for room much earlier since the popular locations tend to run out of spaces fairly early in the semester. I would also have more confirmed companies in advance so I could start advertising the companies that are attending S-PAC earlier to students.
I would also be a great candidate for the IEEE Academic Affairs Chair. However, one regret I have about being the Academic Affairs Chair this year is my inability to have the annual IEEE Professor’s Pie Toss. The event fundraises for a local school while also letting students pie their favorite professors. Due to the short notice and the raining weather, I was not able to have a high attendance in professors for the Pie Toss. If elected as the IEEE Academic Affairs Chair again next year, I will plan earlier and make sure to keep this annual IEEE event.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

I have been on planning committees and E-board for student organizations since high school. I love working with others to organize fun events for students! As the IEEE Academic Affairs Chair this year, I have planned a few Professor Speaker Series (where professors in the field of Electrical Engineering gave presentations on their current research) and an IEEE Quiz Bowl. I have experience talking to/emailing professors to come present about their research. I would be a great candidate for both the Vice President position and the Academic Affairs Chair position.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

The attendance of IEEE events (exclude S-PAC) this year has been low. Next year, I plan to have events confirmed a few weeks before to allow time for proper advertisement. In addition, at the beginning of each semester, I plan to send out a survey to all the students on the email list to collect the times when they are most available. This way, IEEE can plan according to have high attendance.
In terms of new events, I would like IEEE to have a ‘Dinner with Professor’ event during the fall semester to encourage more students to participate in research. This event complements the Professor Speaker Series throughout the year.

Name: Tiffany Young
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Freshman
First-Choice Position: Director of Communication
Second-Choice Position: Academic Affairs Chair
Third-Choice Position: Philanthropy Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

Director of Communication - I am interested in being the Director of Communication because the position interacts with all levels of the organization, from on- campus to regional to international. It gives me a sense of the larger purposeofIEEE,notjust its goals for USC. Furthermore, I wish to promote IEEE activities and hopefully increase turnout to more social events.
Academic Affairs Chair - One of the key factors that really attracted me to USC was how accessible undergraduate research is. I would love to show other students this great aspect of USC by arranging lab tours. Furthermore, the Faculty Spotlight Series is a great chance to approach various professors and I would like to provide this opportunity to students who wish to learn beyond the classroom. Also, since I am a member of SWE, I can easily collaborate with them to bring in even larger attendance to these events.
PhilanthropyChair-Iam interested in this position because I have been volunteering since 7th grade.NomatterwhereI am, I love giving back to the community that is shaping me and helping me grow.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

Director of Communication - I am very prompt and organized, two characteristics needed to manage the weekly emails and membership list. Organization is also of the utmost importance when collecting responses (RSVP , Google Docs, etc.) from a large group, which I have experience with since I served as Uniform Manager of my high school's 180-piece marching band.
AcademicAffairsChair- I have researched with two different labs here at USC and can invite them to speak about their research or even have them refer me to other labs on campus. However, I am not afraid to approach and introduce myself professors, a trait I developed in high school when I contacted and arranged for speakers to visit our campus FIRST Robotics Competition team. My membership in SWE means that I can also arrange joint events such as lab tours with them.
Philanthropy Chair - I have been volunteering with various groups, large and small, national and local, for over 5 years now. I am comfortable approaching organizations and/or businesses about opportunities to cooperate in efforts to givebacktothe community. Furthermore, I have arranged philanthropy eventsinhighschoolfor the campus Chinese Culture Club and FIRST Robotics Competition team.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

I plan to actively participate in helping plan KIEUL events this coming year. It may be worth looking into planning events with them.

Name: Yancheng Zeng
Major: Electrical Engineering
Year: Sophomore
First-Choice Position: Academic Affairs Chair
Second-Choice Position: Vice President
Third-Choice Position: Social Events Chair

Why are you interested in this position (theses positions)?

I am interested in the Academic Affairs Chair because I want to offer EE students a more diverse and fascinating academic life outside the classroom. In the past, IEEE has organized many successful academic events such as Professor Talk Series, Research Spotlights, etc. If I become the Academic Affairs Chair, I will not only maintain our traditional events, but also come up with new ideas to enrich EE students' academic experience in electrical engineering. I strongly feel that there is a great potential for IEEE to bring more professors or experts in the field to closely interact with our students and thus create more networking opportunities, such as to find a research or explore front-edge ideas in EE. I really want to serve as the Academic Affairs Chair because I am passionate to bring more events in the coming year and motivated to create an inspiring extracurricular academic environments for our students.
I am also interested to be the Vice President. Because I have been on the E-board for a year, I am familiar in addressing the organization's regular issues and know how to assist the President to achieve the maximum goal. Also, I want endeavor to make our trademark event S-PAC more successful next year.
I want to be the Social Events Chair as well because I would be very happy to organize more fascinating social events for EE students to hang out with our peers and have a break from study.

What experience makes you qualified for this (these) position(s) - and to be an executive board member?

Currently I am the Philanthropy Chair on the E-board. In the past year, I have organized events such as Yogurtland Fundraiser and Lab Tour Day. In the Lab Tour Day event in April, I brought 40 students from 32nd Street Margaret Middle School to campus and showed them our student-run engineering, and it turned out to be an excellent philanthropy event as it largely inspired the kids' interests in sciences and engineering. Through one's experience, I become more proficient in organizing events, setting up specific plans and collaborating with different orgs. I believe that I am very detail- oriented and can perform my duty in a satisfying manner. At the same time, being on board for a year, I know how to work in a more efficient way and how to optimize the E-board team to achieve the maximum goal. I am convinced I will bring my passion and responsibility to the new E-board and endeavor to make IEEE one of the best professional engineering organizations at USC.

Do you have any new and exciting ideas for IEEE-USC in the coming year?

I think we should enlarge our administrative by setting up a committee under each chair. For example, under Social Events Chair, we can recruit two Social Events Committee members to help the chair to organize events.
Also, it would be great if we can start to have a mentor program for IEEE members as to match up between upperclassman and incoming students.
