Queer and Asian Conference 2014 Registration Form
Welcome to the Queer and Asian Conference 2014 Registration Form!

7th Annual Queer and Asian Conference
"refrAction"
UC Berkeley
May 2nd - 4th, 2014

Three years ago, the Queer and Asian Conference used the concept of “Forefront” to bring to light many of the issues that have been amplified by popular media today. Despite many positive advancements, matters such as homelessness among queer youth, mental health in API folks, and the lack of Queer and Asian representation in the media perpetuate in our community. This year, the theme “RefrAction” directs attention to those issues that are not necessarily a priority for mainstream LGBT political agendas. The capitalized “A” signifies how activism can effectively integrate social justice movements into our surroundings through outlets that are not always strictly political, in arenas outside grassroots community organizing.

In the past, we have emphasized the importance of educating ourselves about issues that are not necessarily our own. This year, we want to address that ignoring the intersections of marginalized identities directly decreases the quality of the bigger picture- the larger political movement. But how can we combine our different intelligences to use film or other conventional tools and speak to an audience that may not even be aware of the Queer and Asian identity? And how do we allocate our resources for those who don’t have access to support systems like QACON? This year’s conference challenges us to keep in mind access in both the context of disability and that of socioeconomic standing. We want our attendees to think critically of how to start or strengthen their own Queer and Asian spaces back home. Be it through campus politics, business, or medicine, implementing our individual activism as Queer and Asian folk into our daily lives compels us to amend fractures otherwise overlooked. “RefrAction” allows us to interrupt political narratives and refocus our attention on both underrepresented issues and the issues of those underrepresented.
