Are you a journalist, reporter, producer, or editor ready to learn what's working to improve family planning and sexual and reproductive health, and bring those solutions to your audience?
Apply for the Solutions Journalism Field Reporting Trip to Edo State—an opportunity to see firsthand what's working to improve reproductive health, engage with the communities driving that change, and sharpen the solutions journalism reporting skills required to tell those stories with evidence and nuance.
Organised by Nigeria Health Watch with support from MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices (MSI Nigeria), this hands-on reporting experience, taking place in the last week of July 2026, is designed for journalists passionate about telling impactful stories on family planning and sexual and reproductive health through the lens of solutions journalism.
What the Reporting Trip Offers:
Training: Participate in an in-depth Solutions Journalism training session that equips you to move beyond problem-based reporting. Learn how to identify evidence-based responses to reproductive health challenges and craft compelling, nuanced stories.
Field Reporting: Visit communities in the state to engage with health providers, women, men, young people, local leaders and stakeholders in the state. Observe firsthand the interventions improving access to family planning services.
Story Development: Receive editorial guidance to pitch and shape stories that meet solutions journalism's rigorous standards. Explore how community-based programmes are tackling longstanding reproductive health gaps.
Networking: Connect with fellow journalists, health workers, policymakers, and programme implementers to build long-term collaborations that strengthen your work.
What’s Expected:
Participants will publish at least one solutions-focused story following the reporting trip.
Stories should highlight evidence of effectiveness, limitations, and community perspectives.
Published work will contribute to national conversations on family planning and reproductive health and will be amplified through MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices and Nigeria Health Watch platforms.
Why This Matters:
Nigeria continues to face significant reproductive health challenges, making it critical to highlight solutions that are delivering measurable results while exploring challenges to scaling them. This field trip provides an opportunity to document what is working, explore why these approaches are effective, and examine how they can be sustained and scaled to reach more communities. Through evidence-based, human-centred storytelling, your reporting can help inform policy, shape public discourse, and inspire action to improve reproductive health outcomes across the country. Journalists working in the South west region, specifically Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ondo, states are encouraged to apply
