We reference “revolution” because we are inspired by Dr. Cornel West’s phrase “Don’t be afraid to say “revolution”, because we want a transfer of power from the oligarchs to ordinary citizens, beginning with the poor children of all colors and the orphans and the widows, and the elderly and the working folk.”
But what does revolution mean to you? As a collective of students who identify with the Chican@ movement, we strive to foster a social, political, and cultural consciousness to better our lives individually and as a community. We have a multitude of ways to acknowledge and represent but we may find certain methods exclusive at times. Artistic expression, however, provides us with accessibility. Everyone is an artist. Everyone has the ability to create art, be it oral, visual, auditory, or simply tangible. With such an ability, we are capable of constructing our own individual identities, and our own definitions of “Revolución”. We can then share our stories, and through sharing, begin the process of healing. With that said, MEChA de UCSC would like to invite you to explore the possibilities artistic expression has to offer and express your definition of “revolución”.
With that said, MEChA de UCSC would like to invite you to the Califaztlan's bi-annual MEChA Satewide Conference held Friday, May 25th through Sunday, May 27th 2012 at the University of California, Santa Cruz. To register, please fill out all sections sections 1 though 6, below.
