Digital Tech Workshops for Artists

Six Saturday hands-on workshops for artists by artists seeking support in producing digital media content. These workshops are designed for any Kansas City artists (performance/visual/writer) curious about creating digital content to support their practice. Each of the free workshops are lead by Kansas City time based artists/educators. There is a 10 person limit per workshop- ARTIST MUST REGISTER through the Google Form.


February 1st 2-5pm Sight Seeing 
Cyan Meeks; New Media Dept professor, Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO

Meeks is a mid-career Kansas City based Experimental Documentary Filmmaker with a focus on pairing audio field recordings with manipulated imagery of electrical storms on the Kansas prairie. The films are projected, often accompanied with live instrumentation.

Meeks will share digital field recording and post editing tips pairing open-sourced audio and video into surreal projections. Participants will create short videos with their phones, I-Pads, and laptops. The finished shorts will be screened in the Stern Black Box Theatre at the end of the workshop.

February 15th 9am-12pm Digital Media Tools for Artists 

Ian O’Neill is a Kansas City based New Media artist using creative coding and video art to explore self-image, human experiences, and the relationship between digital and physical realities. He studied Video Art at the University of Missouri’s Digital Storytelling program. Ian is often a visual collaborator for the Extemporaneous Music and Arts Society, an experimental music and art collective based in Kansas City. His work has been showcased at New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival and CST’s ProdoLAB performance series.

A 3-hour workshop showcasing various tools and techniques to help artists with social media, digital documentation, and setting their work apart in the digital ecosystem. The focus is tools that are accessible/ low cost to create and present via phone streaming, documentation, and social media video.

This workshop is designed for Artists, visual or time based, who may never have used social media or technology to amplify their creative practice. The "I do not do social media" crowd or those who want to know more about how the phones they already own can be used for low-cost support in their art practice.

March 1st 9am-12pm Light Right

Micah Thompson is the Resident Lighting Designer for KC Public Theater based in Kansas City, MO. Micah earned his BA in Theatre at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He has worked and designed with local theatre companies around the Kansas City such as the Fishtank Theatre and Kansas City Public Theatre. In addition to lighting design, Micah is a photographer and SPED educator in the Kansas City area who desires to enrich and inspire other through the arts in the community.

Traditional and affordable approaches to lighting live staged performances for video/streaming production on a budget. Participants will learn terminology and equipment required/ hands-on LED light kit operation, lighting placement, proper complexion lighting.

March 15th 9am-12pm Projection Mapping: Bringing Digital Art to Life

David Steele Overholt; Creative Technologist and New Media Educator, Kansas City, KS
Using the projectors in the black box theater, the workshop will guide participants through the process of mapping digital artwork onto physical surfaces for a variety of purposes. Working in small groups, participants will experiment with free and accessible software to create dynamic, site-specific projections. This hands-on session is perfect for artists looking to explore the intersection of digital art and immersive environments.

APRIL 5th 9am-12pm  AI for Beginners: Creative Tools for Artists

Unlock the power of AI in your art with this hands-on workshop. No coding—just creativity! Learn how to generate unique images, refine compositions, generate ideas, styles and color palettes, and enhance details using intuitive AI-powered tools. Held in the black box theater, this interactive session is perfect for artists eager to expand their digital toolkit and push creative boundaries.

APRIL 19th 9am-12pm From Coop to the World 

Cody Boston, Documentary Filmmaker and Video Production Specialist/Producer, Boston Visuals and Flew the Coop Sessions

Boston creates and produces, “Flew the Coop Sessions”, a regular on-line video series featuring local and touring bands.

This 3-hour workshop will begin with a glimpse into Flew the Coop Sessions' streaming platform of featured artists. The crew will share some insights into producing the videos. Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to produce a hands-on approach to recording live music for video pre-production on a budget. Staging, marks, microphone and camera placement, and affordable post- production software and streaming platform requirements will be addressed in Charlotte Street’s Stern Theater.
