We would like to express our disappointment and unease at the University's decision to take disciplinary action against six students involved in the picketing of Charles Stewart House on 8th of April this year. This was a peaceful protest, and we are unaware of any specific allegations of behaviour in excess of the right to peaceful protest that the University extends to all its students.
We share People & Planet's concerns about the impacts of fossil fuel use, the need to divest, and the importance of constructive, peaceful dissent. We are concerned that the right to peaceful protest would appear to be undermined by this disciplinary action.
As an institution that prioritises the teaching of critical thinking and civic values, and which proudly claims to have been influencing the world through these since 1583, Edinburgh University should also be proud to have students who demonstrate integrity and intelligence in their desire to create a better world. We would like to encourage the University to reconsider its decision to take action against these students, and to instead explore more constructive ways of engaging with students who wish to make their voices heard.
