Code Convening PDX 2015
Are you or your colleagues working on a project that would be useful to the journalism community? Do you need some time (and maybe a little guidance) to write great documentation so everyone can get the most out of your code? Then you should apply to participate in the first OpenNews Code Convening of 2015, this May in Portland.

We'll be bringing a cohort of news developers and journalists to the Write The Docs conference, May 17-19. On Sunday, we'll work together to write and revise documentation, and release the latest version of your projects. We'll spend Monday and Tuesday learning from--and talking journalism with--the technical documentation community at Write The Docs. And depending on the scope of project proposals we receive, we may consider adding one last workday on Wednesday.

Code convenings are designed to give promising newsroom projects the last nudge they need toward an open-source release. This event should lend itself to individuals as well as teams of two. OpenNews will cover travel, conference costs and meals; all you need to bring is a great project to get out into the world.

Project proposals will be open through Friday, April 24, at 6 p.m. Eastern. We have space for a small number of individuals and/or teams for this event, so apply now and we'll be in touch soon.

In what city are you based?
Your project
What project are you working on?
Name, description, and GitHub link would be great. An example of how it might be used in the wild is really helpful, too.
Are you able to open source this project?
How might it be reusable by other news organizations?
What type of work would you plan to take on at the convening?
Do you think that Sunday's documentation sprint will be enough time to finish up a new release? If you feel like your project will need more work, tell us here! We work out timelines and do a lot of prep before these events, but we also may consider an extra workday on Wednesday in Portland.
Your team
Can you release this project yourself, or should someone else from your news organization help?
We'll consider individuals as well as teams of two. If your project would benefit from having a second person at the code convening--another developer, designer, or fellow journalist who can collaborate on documentation--please tell us about them here.
Are you able to spend three days at this event?
It's important for your news organization to understand that this is a full-day commitment, and you would not be available for other day-to-day work on these days. (Unexpected fires excluded, of course.)
Tell us about your news organization--what do you think your org will bring to this event?
One of the things we love about this format is the cross-team collaboration, taking advantage of being in the same room even while working on different projects. We're excited to have new or underrepresented points of view in the room.
Members of underrepresented communities
It's important to us to gather a diverse cohort for each code convening. This question is strictly optional and all answers are confidential—we may discuss our demographic data in aggregate, but we will never reveal specific answers. If you are comfortable doing so, please check any boxes that apply to you.
