We ask that you complete this form if you would like your Year 4 - 6 child to walk home alone after school.
There’s no legal age limit for a child to stay home or go out alone, but it’s against the law to leave a child alone if it puts them at risk. We do not allow children to walk home alone until they are at least 8 years old or without permission from you.
The first thing you might think about is their age and maturity. Every child is different, so it’s up to you to decide.
To instill confidence in your child about walking to school:
- walk the route with them several times beforehand
- run through the different tasks they’ll have to complete on each route, such as crossing busy roads or finding a zebra crossing
- remind them about strangers and who is/isn't safe to talk to
- let them know that they should go back to school to find an adult if they are worried
