Why do you want me to complete this questionnaire? We receive a lot of emails every day and in order to use our time efficiently and have all of the information in one place, we have created this short questionnaire. All of the information on the form is required, in order to make the convoy plan and to book accommodation. If your details change after you've submitted a questionnaire, please submit a new one - we will only take into account the information on the most recent questionnaire.
When will I know the convoy plan? We will send it round the moment it's done - we aim for this to be 12-14 days prior to departure. The plan will include who's in your car, their contact details, confirmation that we have booked hostel rooms for you and useful tips. Once you receive this, your driver will contact you and arrange your ferry or tunnel crossing and collection place and time.
Are there unlimited places on the convoys? No, we only have the capacity to organise and book rooms for a limited number of people. We aim to take 40 volunteers per convoy and whilst we attempt to include everyone who volunteers, this is not always possible.
What will I do? Volunteers help at the Help Refugees warehouse, located about 10 minutes from where the camp use to be. The work done there is invaluable and includes sorting donations, packing food and chopping wood. The situation has changed with the eviction of the camp and how things will unfold on the ground remains to be seen. Please be prepared to spend your weekend in the warehouse.
Where will I stay? We arrange twin rooms at a hostel or hotel in Calais for our volunteers. If you are travelling with someone you'd like to share a room with, please write their name in the space provided in the form below.
What will it cost? Accommodation is usually at the youth hostel and cost €20 per night, to be paid on arrival at the hostel.Drivers buy their own ferry or tunnel tickets for their car and passengers; we refund this cost and £40 of fuel costs if they email us their receipts.Passengers are welcome to donate their portion of the fuel costs, £10, to CamCRAG as a contribution to the charity’s costs of providing the convoys.
Subsidised places ...We have a limited number of subsidised places available on our convoys. If you would like to volunteer for a convoy but are unable to afford it please get in touch with us. You would need to show evidence of need (e.g. be in receipt of housing benefit or JSA) and would need to pay your fuel contribution and for your food. If you are not sure whether or not you would qualify, please discuss it with us.
What time will we leave and come back? Most cars leave Cambridge between 5 - 7 pm on Friday evening and leave Calais around 5 pm on Sunday. Some cars leave earlier on Fridays. If you are able to leave earlier please indicate this on the form. Also if you are only able to go for the day, or for one night please let us know. Occasionally we have a driver who can do this.
I have a disability, or health problems. Should I come? It will very much depend on you and how you feel physically at the moment. Much of the work in the warehouse can be physically demanding, requiring lifting, bending and standing up for hours at a time. At times there can be things to do in the warehouse that can be done sitting down, or don't involve lifting, but this will depend on what the current needs are. If you want to discuss this further please do get in touch with us, there are lots of other ways you can volunteer.
I am under 18, can I still come? We are unable to take anyone under 16. We can take 16/17 year olds if a parent or legal guardian is also on the convoy. If this means you are unable to come please do get in touch as there are lots of ways you can help here in Cambridge.
I would like to drive my car, is there anything else I need to know? Thank you! We almost always need volunteer drivers so we appreciate the extra efforts it takes. If you decide to register, by completing the form below, then once the convoy plan has been put together will give you all the details you will need to contact your passengers. You will need to arrange a pick up place and time and then book your ferry or tunnel crossing. You will also need a French car pack (Breathalyser, warning triangle, GB sticker, first aid kit, hazard jacket). If you don't have a car pack we can lend one to you - please just get in touch directly. You can claim back the crossing cost and £40 of fuel, with receipts.
I have a van I could drive, can I help? Please get in touch with us directly. Sometimes we have donations that need taking to the warehouse.
Do I need a DBS check? You do not need to have a DBS check as all the work at we do will be organised by Help Refugees, in the warehouse in Calais. Very occasionally there are jobs that need doing that would require one, so if you do have one it could be helpful to bring a photocopy along with you. I'd like to register but I'm not 100% sure if I'll be able to come . . .If you're at all unsure of whether you'll be able to make it for any reason, please do not register at this time.
Ferry tickets and accommodation have to be booked as soon as the convoy plan is released (10 - 14 days in advance of the convoy) so there's no time for changes at that stage. Please help us to avoid us sending cars down with empty spaces by only registering if you're sure that you can attend.
What if my plans change after I've completed this form and I can no longer come? Please give us as much notice as you can ( i.e.at least 14 days) if you are no longer able to come for any unforeseen reason. Let us know with plenty of notice so we can try to fill the space.
Many last minute cancellations result in empty car seats and beds because we are unable to fill spaces at short notice. This is a wasted resource, as every volunteer is needed at the warehouse. Last minute cancellations are also a lot of extra work for our volunteers (people working to organise the convoy behind the scenes) and the kindly volunteer drivers who will have to change their ferry tickets and collection plans: please be considerate of this.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as you think you might not be able to attend.
By giving us your personal information on this form you consent to us using it in the following ways: - your passport number, date of birth and nationality will only be used to book accommodation, they will be deleted immediately after the convoy; - your email address, telephone number and emergency contact details will be sent to everyone else on that convoy. These will be deleted within a month of the convoy unless you indicate that you wish to receive further information from us in the relevant boxes. 888
