THE REASON FOR A SUSTAINABILITY QUESTIONNAIRE IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES
The growing "Green Libraries" movement has been demonstrating the importance of libraries not only in disseminating the idea of sustainable development or ecological sustainability but also in creating services and programs that serve as examples of "green" attitudes and behaviours.
The concept of a "Green Library" emerged with the Green Libraries Movement, in which librarians, libraries, municipalities, schools, and universities commit to "greening" their libraries through the selection of a variety of actions aimed at reducing their environmental impact.
There is an urgent need to build communities with a strong sense of responsibility in the exercise of proactive citizenship. In this regard, libraries can serve as mentors, positively assisting the communities they serve in developing in a sustainable, resilient, and regenerative manner.
The Librarian at the Rochester Public Library states, "Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities."
With this questionnaire, the School Libraries Group of the Municipality of Palmela aims to gather information related to aspects and practices related to environmental sustainability, with the ultimate goal of highlighting how the school libraries in the Municipality of Palmela are and can contribute to this cause in the future.
To make this happen, we need multidisciplinary teams of competent professionals who know what to do to help libraries realize this vision of Green Literacy and Mentorship for Ecological Education. The group of professionals working in the school libraries of Palmela has decided to take a first step by organizing a list of questions about sustainability in school libraries.
This questionnaire was developed by a multidisciplinary team: SABE; ENA. This questionnaire was inspired by the questionnaire proposed by Sandra Dias (2015) in her master's thesis and the checklist of the reference framework for the Green Seal accreditation.
