Whanganui Regional Museum Trust Questionnaire

Kia Ora and thank you for contributing to our community consultation.

The Whanganui Regional Museum Trust (WRMT) is reviewing its governance and constitutional arrangements. This follows an independent review into the cost effectiveness of the Museum commissioned by the Whanganui District Council in 2024.  It is also a requirement to review our Constitution under the new Charities Act 2023.

The Joint Council of WRMT is consulting stakeholders about four key areas:

  1. The WRMT Governance model
  2. The WRMT Constitutional review
  3. Transfer of staff and operations to Whanganui District Council
  4. Other issues and future directions

Your feedback will guide decisions that balance sustainability, bicultural governance, and the long-term protection of taonga and representation of our collection.

The WRMT Governance Model

The Museum is governed by a bicameral model, whereby two Houses work together in partnership:

Tikanga Māori House – represents tangata whenua groups with traditional ties to the Whanganui region and taonga held by the Museum, operating under tikanga (cultural protocols).

Electoral College/Civic House – represents wider community stakeholders, including the Whanganui District Council and others with a strong interest in the Museum.

Together, these two Houses appoint members to the Joint Council, which makes decisions on behalf of the Museum.
