HOW THIS INITIATIVE WORKS:
The Illuminated Cities Project will select, on a competitive basis, youth-designed and youth-led Citizen Journalism projects. The competition is open to high-school aged youth from NEW YORK CITY and CHICAGO only.
Proposals are due March 31, 2015.
We expect youth research teams will begin their work with introductory trainings in early April 2015 and complete their final projects by November 30, 2015. If necessary, we will provide appropriate extensions to ensure that the work is of the highest quality.
The summer component of the project will be based in New York City and Chicago between June 26 - July 12 (dates subject to change).
Final products will be showcased on the Illuminated Cities Project blog, website, and social media pages and reach a global audience.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION, THE PROJECT MUST:
Involve a team of TWO youth, supported by at least one adult community leader, mentor, teacher and/or adult ally who can give the project their good attention and time.
Target a problem or issue meaningful to the youth/school/community and that shows promise of having real impact.
Lead participants through an extended period of research that includes a formulation of the problem, a research design, data collection and analysis, and the creation of a final product(s).
Put youth in a leadership role, including being the primary authors of the proposal.
Culminate in a community presentation and a plan for next steps.
