As a photographer who has been living in Warsaw for more than a decade, I have discovered that walking with the aid of historical images and seeking out witness buildings or objects can significantly enhance the psychological process of reflecting on places. This innovative approach permits the re-creation of the past of such places and evaluates the effect of experiencing the history of a location on the psychological aspects of the people-place relationship.
For my upcoming walking tour, I have chosen the district of Muranów, located in central Warsaw, which served as the site of the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. The German forces forcibly packed over 400,000 Jews into the ghetto, and between 250,000 and 300,000 individuals died due to the effects of disease, starvation, and Nazi brutality.
Ironically, our meeting point will be at Umschlagplatz, the site where numerous Jews living in the Warsaw Ghetto were compelled to gather before being transported to the Treblinka death camp, where they met their tragic end. During the tour, we will cover a 5 kilometer distance while I point out significant locations of remembrance, remnant buildings, and ghetto wall markers paired with archival images from the area. This approach will aid participants in better experiencing and understanding the complex history of this region.
