Warrior? Prophet? Terrorist?
Author Tony Horwitz Visits Lawrence to Reconstruct John Brown
(Lawrence, KS) The Lawrence Public Library today announced that Pulitzer Prize-winning
journalist and noted author Tony Horwitz will visit Lawrence on Thursday, April 4, 7:30 pm at Lib- erty Hall. Together with the Lawrence Public Library Founda*on and Crown Automo*ve, the li- brary will host “Reconstruc*ng John Brown,” a special program presented as part of the 1863
Commemorate Lawrence year-long observance of the 150th anniversary of Quantrill’s Raid. The
program is free and open to the public.
Mr. Horwitz will be joined on stage by KU Professor of History Jonathan Earle for a lively
discussion about aboli*onist John Brown, his life, and his legacy. Mr. Horwitz is the author of
several best-selling books, including his most recent, Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid
That Sparked the Civil War.
“Tony Horwitz is a top-shelf popular historian who makes history interes*ng and engag- ing,” said Brad Allen, director of Lawrence Public Library. “John Brown transformed the history of
the aboli*onist movement when he arrived in Kansas Territory in 1855. But he was a highly con- troversial figure, commi=ed to use whatever means necessary to keep Kansas free. Tony’s and
Jonathan’s work has done so much to make this complex man more human and realis*c.”
“Reconstruc*ng John Brown” is made possible thanks to the support of Miles Schnaer’s
Crown Automo*ve of Lawrence. The Raven Bookstore will be selling copies of Tony Horowitz’s
and Jonathan Earle’s books at the event. Doors will open to the public at 7 pm.
Official biographies and photos of Tony Horwitz and Jonathan Earle are included here.
