After you have read this lesson, you should be able to:

• describe leadership,

• understand the importance of leadership in the attainment of

organizational goals,

• identify the impact of a particular theory of leadership on employees’

behavior and task accomplishment in an organization,

• understand the concept of managerial grid,

• identify a particular leadership style on the basis of a leader’s position on

the managerial grid,

• differentiate between trait, behavioral and situational theories,

• appreciate the transition of leadership from transactional to

transformational,

• identify the substitutes and neutralizers for leadership.

Are you aware of the presence of leadership in all walks of life? Have you ever asked you

class representative to get a test postponed, or your teacher to persuade the principal

for arranging a picnic for you? Have you ever heard about someone working in an

organization and asking his/her boss to grant them a day off, or allow them to come in

casuals instead of formals on some specific days? Such a person does not make an

individual representation, but represents the entire group to a higher authority for the
