Four herbs that combat stress, boost mood, and build the immune system for an improved quality of life.

1). Reishi, Ganoderma lucidum,is an edible mushroom that has been used for its healing abilities for thousands of years. It has been has been studied for it’s; immune boosting properties,[1] cancer fighting properties,[2] and for its ability to reduce fatigue and depression.[3] This superfood is native to several parts of Asia and is known to work as an “immune modulator.” This means reishi mushrooms can help to regulate the immune system, and restore hormonal balance.[4] Recent studies have shown that reishi mushrooms can lower inflammation and release NT (natural killer) cells, which remove various types of mutated cells from the body.[5] This is a wonderful mushroom to add into your medicine cabinet. Our favorite way to use reishi?

REISHI RECIPE[6]

1 cup boiling water

1 cup unsweetened coconut milk

1 tsp reishi mushroom powder

2 tsp coconut oil

Dash of cinnamon

Dash if maple syrup

This is a wonderfully rich, dark, and nourishing and can be used as a coffee substitute.

2). Holy Basil, Ocimum tenuiflorum is one of the top adaptogenic herbs that reduces stress[7] and enhances cognitive abilities.[8] It is known in India as an anti-aging food. Evidence shows that holy basil is important for preventing gastric ulcers.[9] In Hindu mythology, the plant is an incarnation of the goddess, Tulsi, offering divine protection.[10] Studies have shown that holy basil can protect healthy cells from the toxicity of radiation and chemotherapy.[11] The list of Tulsi’s uses is long. It can be used as; a hand sanitizer, a mouthwash, a water purifier, and can assist in the preservation of food.[12] Tulsi has been shown to counter metabolic stress through the normalization of blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipid levels.[13]  It has been shown to counter psychological stress through its antidepressant properties, mood enhancing properties, and through Tulsi’s positive effects on cognitive function and memory.[14]

HOLY BASIL TEA RECIPE:
Tulsi tea
Rose petals
Gotu kola

-bring 2 cups water to a boil
-add 1 tsp tea
-turn off the heat and steep for five minutes
-add honey to taste
-enjoy

3). Licorice root, Glycyrrhiza glabra is one of the top herbs that helps us to adapt to stress, and is very beneficial in regulating cortisol, the stress hormone, allowing your adrenals to take a break. [15] In the modern world, many people are suffering from adrenal weakness due to inherited genetic weakness, or tissue congestion.[16] This adrenal weakness has been linked to female cancers, anxiety, and an inability to fight inflammation in the body. [17]Licorice root has been studied for its anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects, and has even been shown to mediate alcohol induced, liver damage due to it’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant boosting properties. [18] [19] [20]  Licorice anti inflammatory and antispasmodic properties also give it credit for pain relief.[21]

LICORICE TEA BLEND:[22]

1 cup licorice root (cut and sifted)

2 cups cinnamon chips

½ cup dried orange peel

½ cup astragalus root (cut and sifted)

½ cup ashwagandha root (cut and sifted)

½ cup eleuthero root (cut and sifted)

TO MAKE:

Add 1 tbsp licorice tea blend to 1 cup water

4). Rose, Rosa damascena is not only a beautiful and and aromatic flower, Rose also has many pharmacological properties including, antidiabetic, relaxant, anti-bacterial, and anti-HIV.[23] The North American Indians used a decoction of the root of this plant as a cough remedy.[24] Rose oil has been used as a healer of depression, tension, stress, nervousness, and grief, and to balance out hormonal health related to sex drive. [25] [26] Rose tea has been used for the following; improving digestion, relieving constipation, aiding in sleep and circadian rhythm patterns,improving liver function, boosting the mood, and supporting the immune system with it’s high vitamin C content.[27]

How to make rose tea?

Add 2 tbsp dried rose petals to 2 cups of water. Let simmer for approximately five minutes. Remove from heat, and strain into tea cups. Add honey to taste (optional).
